Abraham Baldwin
Outlasts West Ga.
"Braves" 30-39
In a breath-taking ball game a
breaking sharp shooting quintet
of “Abac’s” from Abraham Baldwin
Agricultural College outlasted a gal
l3nt band of hard fighting “Braves”
of West Georgia 30-39.
It was a whale of a ball game
from the opening gun to the final
whistle and in the last half the lead
changed from one team to the other
so fast that the spectators went into
a frenzie of excitement. At the half
Abraham-Baldwin was leading by
only one point and it was not until
the losing minutes of the last quar
ter that they were able to hit the
basket consistently enough for any
thing like a comfortable lead.
Roy Malcolm and Capt. Roy Mc-
Graw led the “Brave” attack while
Kemp and Pitts were beest for the
victors.

North Ga. Cadets
Win Over West
Georgia Braves
Paced by the elusive left-hander,
Lowery, North Georgia’s “Cadets”
raced easily over a team of listless
West Georgia “Braves” 40-23 in a
repetition of their victory earlier in
the year.
After the first few minutes the
“Braves” were never in the ball game.
They were playing, however, with
out the service of their star pivot
man, Herbert Bice, who was injured
in a game last week. The N. G. C.
attack hit on all cylinders through
out the game with the exception of
the second quarter when they scored
only three points. The score at the
half stood at 20-9.
During the second half the “Braves”
tried a few offensive tricks of their
own and pulled up to within 5 points
of the “Cadets”. The Dahlonega boys
soon recovered their first quarter
spark, however, and rolled up a score
that at the end of the game read
40-23.
For the winners, Lowery was the
big gun with 17 points, with McGraw
possessing 8 points to lead the losers

Augusta Junior
College Trips
Braves 36-25
Playing inconsistant ball the West
Georgia Braves met their second de
feat at the hands of a fast quintet
from Augusta Junior College. The
first half was a close affair with the
score 15 to 14 in Augusta’s favor, but
in the final period the Augustonians
swept ahead to gain a 36-25 decision.
Captain Roy McGraw, high point
man for the season, hit the back
board for 12 points, to keep the
Braves in the ball game. Willie Pop
kin, and Inman with 29 points be
tween them were high scorers for
Augusta.

THE WEST GEORGIAN
Braves Drop Both Ends
On Week-End Trip To
Milledgeville-Augusta
The cadets of Georgia Military
College and the cagers of Augusta
Junior College showed unlimited
power last week-end by romping
through the scrappy Braves of West
Georgia College to the etunes of 58-
34 and 59-40.
In the G. M. C. game Capt. Mc-
Graw with 14 points and Bice with
11 points, led the scoring for the
Braves, while Hollingsworth with 14
points and Lucky with 11 points,
paced the winners. At Augusta, Willis
with 19 points, and Popkin with 13
points, were high for Augusta Junior
College while an invaluable Her
bert Bice with 13 points, and Capt.
McGraw with 9 points again proved
their mettle by leading the Braves’
attack. The line-ups were as follows:
W. G. C. Pos. G. M. C.

Braves Fall At
Hands of M. G. C.
Champs In Thriller
January 31, 1942. The state Junior
College Champs from Middle Georgia
College exhibited their greatness con
vincingly last week, defeating the
“Braves” 47-37 in the West Georgia
gymnasium.
Middle Georgia led at the half 27-
16, but the “Braves” surged for
ward brilliantly in the last half, pull
ing up to within two points of the
victors when Herbert Bice wrench
ed his knee and had to be taken out
of the game. When the game was re
sumed, the West Georgia five seem
ed shaken, and the Middle Georgia
Cagers rolled up a lead of ten points
in the last three minutes of play.
Malcolm for the “Braves” with 15
points and Thomas for the winners
with 21 points led in the scoring.

Split Laurels
With Rinehardt
The W. G. C. “Braves” went on
a victory march last Tuesday night
and scored a decisive win over a
larger but less experienced Rinehardt
quintet. The West Georgia basketeers
shot to a lead early in the game and
held to it until the final whistle.
For the victors, Whitner led the
offensive with 16 points and Malcolm
was second with 10. Rogers, starting
his first game with the first string
ers, collected 7 points. Owens paced
the losers with 11 points.

GIRLS’ GAME
< The West Georgia Squaws suffered
defeat by one point at Rinehardt
February 3rd. The Rinehardt six took
the lead in the beginning and at the
end of the first quarter had chalked
up 10 points to West Georgia’s 3.
Although West Georgia began with
a slow start she overcame this by
tying 23-23 in the last quarter with
only a few minutes left to play. Ring
ing a free shot in the last seconds of
the game, Rinehardt became the
victor, 24-23.
Outstanding West Georgians were
Mitchell, forward, and Anderson, for
ward, who proved to be quite as good
a guard.

Beating The Tom-Tom
With
Albert Browning
The past two weeks have been
very bad ones for the West Georgia
Basketball team. The “Braves” were
able to win only one game out of
eight played. There seems to be too
much friction between the. members
of the team for a winning combina
tion to be produced. If a player
makes an error or allows his man to
shoot two points his teammates im
mediately begin to gripe and growl
at him. This does not leave a very
good impression with the people who
come to see the games nor does it
cause the team to play better ball.
The sooner everyone learns that it
takes five men to play basketball
and that they must work together
as a unit, the sooner they will start
winning ball games.
The West Georgia Club has been
hard hit recently by loss of players.
Both Herbert Bice and Charles Lang,
members of the first team, are unable
to play. To somewhat offset this loss
PAGE THREE
they have anew player, Jack Puck
ett. Although Puckett has been with
the team only a few days, he has
already started one game.
In checking back over the last
seven games, it was found that Mc-
Graw has gained a total of 52 points
Malcolm is second with 42 and
Whitner third with 41. Whitner’s de
fensive play seems to be the most
outstanding although McGraw, Rus
sell, and others have done some very
good work. The best players West
Georgia has encountered this year
are Lowery of North Georgia, Hol
lingsworth of Georgia Military Col
lege, and Thomas of Middle Geor
gia. The best team played by the
“Braves” is either Georgia Military
College or Augusta Junior College.
INTRA MURAL BASKETBALL
The intra-mural classes are hard
at work now trying to produce a
basketball team that will win the
tournament to be held sometime
soon. Each class is certain that its
team will win the tournament and
friendly rivalry runs high. The var
sity players are coaching the teams
and are doing a good job of it. Bas
ketball practice it held two days a
week and military drill one.
