COTTON PICKING
COLLEGE STYLE
“Oh, I wish I were in the land of
cotton,” was the familiar theme on
the West Georgia Campus last week.
Especially when the Volunteer Work
ers went out on Saturday, October 2,
to do their patriotic bit.
This group of students could have,
like many others, stayed in bed rest
ing their aching backs, which was the
result of their experience in the cot
ton patch the Wednesday before. In
stead, they chose to try again.
Singing cheerfully with their pick
sacks and lunch bags under their
arms, at 8:30 they boarded the college
bus and headed for the small district
in Carroll County, Burwell.
As soon as they were shown where
to pick, they immediately set to
work.
Having finished two fields of cot
ton, everyone paid a visit to the
country store.
Then they rode from the store on
a pick-up truck to their next field
where they began anew to pick until
lunch.
Piling upon the picked cotton, tired
and worn, they ate their lunch.
After lunch the steps back to the
cotton field were not taken energet
ically as they were that morning.
At 5:00 o’clock they left the field
to return to the college.
Those who picked were: Nell Ruth
Davis, June Hart, Martha Hunt,
Sara Colquitt, Ruth Leake, Glenn
