Malaria Control Campaign
The plans for a Malaria Control Cam
paign are being made at West Georgia
College, which will rid the surrounding
county from the threat of malaria. Un
der the leadership of Dr. Smith, the
Third-Year students have been studying
and planning their method of attack.
Their first aim will be to learn the
extent of malaria in this section of the
state. When a trip to the State Health
Department proved unsuccessful in find
ing out the correct number of malaria
cases in Carroll County, this group de
cided to gather their data from local
doctors and pharmacists. An estima
tion of the numbers of malaria cases
will be made by finding out approxi
mately how much patent medicine is
sold.for fevers in surrounding towns.
When the extent of malaria is deter
mined, the members of the Malaria Con
trol Campaign plan to study ways of
gaining state aid. Two years ago Dr.
Rhodes made a survey of how to drain
the Tallapoosa River, thus eliminating
the breeding places of the Amophales
mosquito. This plan, however was nev
er put into effect.
In order to gain more information
about this project, material has been
ordered from the State Health Depart
ment and from the T.V.A. Dr. Smith
and his committee will receive films and
reading material on malaria control.
The films will be shown all over the
county and it is hoped that they will
create a malaria conscious public. If
people are made familiar with the hab
its of the Amophales mosquito and with
the prevention and cure of malaria, half
the battle will be won.
Efforts will be made to get the co
operation of the County Schools and
the Carroll County Service Council in
starting this drive.
By the use of films and propoganda,
an educational awareness to the dang
ers of malaria can be created. The fol
low up will consist of eliminating the
breeding places, mosquito proofing the
buildings and giving treatment to ma
laria victims.
A good foundation has been made for
the project of wiping out malaria. West
Georgia students will want to help all
they can in this new drive.
Don't Throw That Away!
Yes, that is right, don’t throw away
those old shoes, but instead have them
fixed and wear them longer. We rave
and groan about being limited to three
pairs of shoes a year, while some of the
people in European countries cannot see
how we can possibly have three pairs of
shoes, while they have not even one
pair during the year.
We are truly a fortunate people, and
certainly we want to remain that way.
There must be a change in attitude to
ward many things. It is our duty to
conserve to the limit. Instead of buy
ing everything which can be bought, it
would be much better to see how much
we could keep from buying. This prac
tice will save money, help keep down
inflation, and will give some other per
son a chance to obtain products which
he needs.
The next time you start to throw
something away, think twice; and if it
can possibly be used—don’t throw it
away!
