They Say There
Were Goblins!
The freshmen party given Oct
-23 at the City Gymnasium was
one of the most outstanding so
cial events for the students and
faculty of West Georgia since
Freshmen Week.
It has been a custom for sev
eral years to give the Freshmen
a dance or party to get them in
“full swing”. This year the
Freshman Party was given so
near to Hallowe’en that decora
tions and color schemes for Hal
lowe’en were used and were so
effectively carried out we felt
as though we were in the very
presence of goblins.
As we arrived at the gym
around 5 o’clock we had a while
to wait before the “best” was to
come, so some of us entertained
ourselves by playing records and
dancing while others went out
side to build a camp fire and to
help prepare the food.
By six-thirty approximately
175 people had arrived including
present students, faculty mem
bers and their families, and also
former students whom everyone
was very glad to welcome back.
We went outside for a picnic
supper which included a num
ber of good things: weiners, po
tato chips, candy, peanuts and
all that goes with a picnic. While
we ate we stood around . the
camp fire and sang songs which
were led by a few faculty mem
bers and students.
After a delightful supper we
returned to the gym and all
grouped around the open fire
while we were led in some songs
by Miss Woodruff, accompanied
by Mr. Yeomans playing an ac
cordian. Then Miss Sturgis led
us in several games which we
all enjoyed very much.
Someone suggested that the
■ next number be the “Virginia
Reel” and although most of us
were unfamiliar with this dance
it seemed to prove a success af
ter being demonstrated to us by
a “professional” group.
After finishing the “Virginia
Reel” all types of dance records
were played, including waltzs,
jitterbugs, and others, so that
everyone could participate in
dancing at one time or another.
Buses were provided to trans
port us back to school about 10
o’clock. Everyone came back
with memories of the pleasant
evening.

JUS' SNOOPIN'
The past month has been so
exciting for me in my snoopin’
business that I’m afraid I may
appear to be a bit presumptuous
about some of the things that
have loomed up before my eyes
here on the campus. If what I
saw (or thought that I saw)does
n’t appeal to your way of think
ing just consider it another opti
cal illusion of mine.
Remember the party at the city
gym? Didn’t we have fun though
—especially those who had es
corts. Take Bobbie Cobb, she
even hunted her a man and did
she go in style.
Coralice, you must not let
“Maxwell Field” keep your
thoughts “up in the air” so much
of the time. By the way, it was
fun having the old students back
on the campus, wasn’t it?
Since our last dance Wright
seems to be kidding along with
Evelyn. Mitchell, be careful, re
member it’s your heart.
Anna's fleet came in last week
and was she happy! It was great
fun having you back on the cam
pus, Merrell.
It is always advisable to throw
water from upstairs windows,
is it Betty Jean?
Bobby Moore, why can’t you
make up your feeble mind? It
isn’t fair to keep so many up in
the air all of the time. Or am I
flattering you?
“Drooly” says it isn’t so bad
after all to have a sprained ankle
when you have a special escourt
like the one she has been sport
ing around.
Little Maxene Harris might be
a bit timid now but just give him
time. Those dimples surely do
make girls’ hearts flip.
Archie and Louise seem to be
two swell kids. Wonder if they
have ever thought about getting
together sometime, or should I
say, more often.
Did I hear Fisher singing that
song oh, you know
the one that says, “everything’s
going my way.”
Crowder, bless your heart, you
seem to be doing all right with
Hampton. Good looking jacket
you wear around here, too.
Bill Bartlett is going to be
charged an “extra service” tele
phone fee if he doesn’t quit call
ing Adamson Hall so much.
Nancy Stallworth who is the
apple of your eye here on the
campus? Why not give some of
these boys around here a break.
They think you’re cute.
Well, I guess that winds up
the gossip for this time except
that I’ve heard several of the
girls voice their opinion in favor
of a Sadie Hawkins Day. What
about it boys?

Sounds That Keep
Me Awake at Night
As I get into bed each night, I
immediately begin to wonder
which of the following nuisances
will keep me awake longest: the
clock, train, beacon light or the
rats.
To begin with, I slip the blan
ket over my ears to prevent the
cold air from reaching them, but
the most important reason is to
get the noise of the old family
clock in the hallway to seem as
far away as possible. As I listen
to the swinging back and forth
of the pendulum, I can get my
mind on nothing else. I roll and
tumble and become more rest
less. I try to count the number
of times it ticks in a half half,
but no—even this will not put
me to sleep. I think back to my
ancestors and wonder that if my
great - great grandfather had
known this clock would cause
me sleepless hours, would he
have ever put it there. I finally
drop into a silent sleep after
wondering about all these ances
tors.
Next, at exactly 12 o’clock, the
long shrill whistle of the mid
night train arouses me. I open
my eyes, wonder if it is a fire
whistle, and suddenly realize
what it is and the many hours
it kept me awake the night be
fore. I hear the trembling of the
tracks as it rushes by, two blocks
away. I wonder why my home
should be here near the tracks.
Why couldn’t my father have
chosen a nice quiet place over
near the church? Getting my
mind on where I should have
lived, I fall asleep once more
wondering what will awake me
next.
But, in less time than an hour,
something flashes across m y
face. I open my eyes and real
ize I have turned over in my
sleep; my facfe is now towards
the wnidow, a very unfortunate
position for me. I become afraid
and very nervous lest it be some
prowler with a flashlight out
side my window. No, it couldn’t
be this, for my room is upstairs.
Oh, yes, I should have remem
bered the beacon light seven
miles away, guiding the planes
through the night. When I turn
my head it seems to shine in the
entire room and I wonder if it
isn’t almost daylight, the room
is so bright. Closing my eyes
and imagining it’s revolving
ceased, I snore quietly once
more.
Then, at about four o’clock in
the morning sitting upright in
bed wondering what had awak
ened me, I hear the patter of
mice feet across the floor. I
w r onder if the mothers are teach
ing their little ones to walk, run,
or dance. Having a community
frolic they must be playing all
sorts of games. One squeals as if
he has been caught and others
join in. By this time, I have had
enough; I must get some sleep.
I reach for my shoe, which I
keep under the bed for this pur
pose, and give the heel three or
four taps against the floor. The
little mischiefs scramble at once
for their holes and their party
is over. I then fall asleep deter
mined not to wake again until
morning.
