Fifty-Four Gridders Report
For Football Practice
September 30, found 54 eager
gridders gathered on the local ath
letic field for the first football
practice.
Coach Earl Wheby, former out
standing guard of Georgia Tech,
called the practice session and was
very much pleased with the turn
out and the interest the young in
experienced ball players have
have shown thus far in the prac
tices. In the Coach’s own words,
■’They didn’t know much the first
day and I admit I didn’t have much
hopes of having a first rate ball
team, but they have displayed plen
ty of spirit and interest and now
I’m more than pleased with their
showings.”
This statement of Coach Wheby
in itself should show the interest
Coach Wheby and his Braves have
|n establishing a lasting and per
manent football team at W. G. C.
as well as winning the schedule
that has been made up for the sea
son.
;• The only worry of the Braves
v this year is the lack of experienced
linesmen. Although the lines aver
ages 176 pounds, it is unsuitable
which is an important factor in the
razzle-dazzle “T” formation from
which the Braves will run. Cook,
Russell, and Jack Hammill have
shown good form at the guard pos
itions, while Roberson and Ezzell
have given good performances at
the ends. The tackles are in doubt
with Brumbelow and Finch round
ing into shape rapidly. Marx, Jones
and Broden, are battling it out for
the important center position.
The backfield is loaded with
talent such as Pitts, Roberson,
Smith, Osment, Jones and many
others. This fast shifty backfield
will use a modified “T” formation
as well as the orthodox Notre
Dame "T” especially designed for
trickery and deception.
Not much is known of the
strength of the opponents, as most
of them are renewing football act
ivities this year, the first since the
war.
Fort McPherson of Atlanta fill
Spotlight the Braves debut. The
game will be played on the Carroll
ton High School field at 8:00 P. M.,
Saturday, October 26, and an inter
esting game is in store for the
grid fans—Fort Mac being loaded
with Army talent.
Coach Wheby, as well as the stu
dent body, is especially interested
in the outcome of this game as it
will show everyone the strength of
the W. G. C. fighting eleven under
game conditions.
The Complete schedule is as fol

Recreation
Round-Up
Echoes of laughter and fun rang
through the gym as the old and
new students gathered for recrea
tion. With the beloved “juke box”
broken, the crowd sought other
ways to spend their first Saturday
night of the school year.
Everything was original. But de
finitely! The program began with
groups giving their interpretations
of songs. Certain skits, such as
“Rusty’s” idea for “Smoke Gets In
Your Eyes” would have made a
composer turn over in his grave.
“What is so rare as a day in
June?” June, the month of wed
dings and we had one at rec. Such
a lovely affair! The bride carried
a beautiful bunch of goldenrods
which left a lovely odor trailing be
hind, perfuming the whole room.
Some of the students present were
such sentimentalists. They cried
and sneezed as Dr. Roberts pro
nounced the couple man and wife.
However, this was only one of the
skits representing the months of
the year. One more should be men
tioned. Just in case you should see
a well known man on this campus
carrying a bow and arrow, and
running after the couples on the
campus don’t be frightened. The
Indians that lie under Melson Hall
have not come back to scalp you.
It is just West Georgia’s own cup
id, “Rusty”. According to the active
part he took in the recreation pro
gram, he might be called the "man
of the night”.
Last was the beauty contest
featuring the most beautiful men
on the campus. When the men had
their make-up on, even Venus
would have been envious. The con
test came to a climax when Carbon
Sanders was chosen the lovliest
belle of them all.
The second Saturday night was
certainly not the loneliest night of
the week. With anew record play
er, new records and new men, the
night was a big success. But danc
ing was a minor activity in com
parison to the many games being
played by the students. It was quite
obvious that a few champion table
tennis players have been added to
the student body and with two new
tables, they had a chance to "show
off’.
Anew record player! And such
a cute freshman, Ruth Burrus, put
ting the platters on. She is the big
boss and that prized job is her res
ponsibility, so let her run that rec
ord player. When someone breaks
it, everyone has to live without
music. So since she knows how to
work it, leave the job to her. Much
new equipment has been added to
the Physical Education Department
for the benefit of all students. Two
ping pong tables, new badmington
equipment, shuffleboard and table
games of all kinds. These belong
to you, so when you check some
thing out, take care of it.
THE WEST GEORGIAN
Glances From
The Sidelines
Congratulations to Coach Wheby
for an inter-collegiate football team
at West Georgia—Let’s all remem
ber the townspeople who have also
helped in sponsoring this first
team—May they continue—Let’s
beat Fort Mac Pherson —Congrats
to the new cheerleaders. We’re all
right behind you—Why were the
boys so happy for the first two
weeks? Could it be because there
was no Phys. Ed? —Who threw the
rock through the utility house win
dow—Hurray!! The team managers
are really good. "Both-of-em” —Why
isn’t there some recreation on Sat
urday afternoon? —Things are be
ginning to look good for the bas
ketball team this year. May they
better the record of last year’s
team of 18 wins, 6 losses and third
place in the State Tournament—
Who is the best table tennis play
er on the campus?—Jack Pinson
says he is—lt seems that the boys
are keeping in shape prety well
walking to all meals this year—Put
out that cigarette ball player, you’-
ve go to keep in shape—This one
is for the girls alone: Who is your
football hero? Better hustle boys—
To Improve
Athletic Field
The red clay on the athlete field
seems to have attracted attention
from all parties and the question
arises, "What are they going to do
with it?”
These criticisms are usually pret
ty harsh, but the condition of the
field deserves criticism. If our col
lege is going to participate in col
lege football it needs a stadium as
well as a practice field in order to
draw the public to games as well
as to enroll football minded stu
dents at West Georgia.
There are new things coming to
the athletic field, however. The stu
dents have been very cooperative
in removing the rocks from the
field. In the near future the field
is to be convered with topsoil and
sodded.
After the field is in condition for
us, five major sports will be featur
ed at West Georgia, football, soc
cer, softball, archery and possibly
track. When this program is com
pleted West Georgia can then hold
its head high with pride and look
ahead to an athletic future—one
any college could be proud of.
Women's Sports
Miss Ruth Sturgis, Girls’ Physi
cal Education Director, began the
first week of this year having con
ferences with the girls in regard
to the recent physical examinations
held here.
The outlook for the planned act
ities are not too bright, however.
So far, easter egg hunting is the
main sport (picking rocks off the
athletic field.)
Miss Sturgis plans to offer ar
chery, field hockey and tennis.
However, until the tennis courts
and athletic field are put into bet
ter shape, the athletic program will
be undecided.
