Russell Alumni
Lobbies Pass To
Defeat Braves 13-7
The Russell High Alumni looped
u long 61 yurd pass for a hard
fought win over the Braves, at Rus
sell Field on November 15.
The Braves and the Alumni
fought on even terms throughout
t lie contest with both teams hitting
hard und fighting even harder for
the outcome of the ball game, but
the Alumni had the edge in Ratte
ree and Pickurd, half-backs who
made the going tough for the W.G.
C. forward wall.
In the first quurter, the Alumni
luiied to gain as the Braves’ line
held stuble and repulsed all attacks.
The Braves' pussing was slowed
down since both teams had iden
tically colored jersies. But in spite
of this obstacle the Braves’ running
attack proved to be as efficient as
their passing attack.
It took the second quarter to
bring Ratteree into action and a
touchdown for the Alumni. Early
in the second quarter Rutteree
raceu ii yurds for a score. The con
version was misseu and tire t-a/e
stood 6 to 0 in favor of the Alumni
as the half came to an end.
In the second half the Braves
opened their attack und picked up 5
first downs to the Alumni’s 1. In
terceptions were few even with the
handicap of jersies as passes were
hurled by Pitts to the backfield and
glue-fingered ends.
In the last quarter a pass from
Pitts to Robinson started the Braves
touchdown march. After several
line plays the ball was put down on
the four yard line where Bill Smith
went off tackle for a touchdown. A
beautiful pass conversion from Pitts
to Hill accounted for the extra
point and put the Braves out in
front by 1 point in a 7 to 6 lead.
It didn’t take the Alumni long to
retaliate as a long 61 yard pass was
thrown to the left end who had
nothing to do but step across the
goal line. The point was good and
the Alumni clinched the game with
a 13 to 7 win.
After the game many of the fans
were well pleased with the Braves
style of ball playing and many of
the Russell Alumni players are now
making plans to enter West Geor
gia next year for service on the
football team.
Jacksonville Eleven
Stings Braves 33-0
The Jacksonville, Alabama State
Teachers College swept the field
clean as the Braves of West Geor
gia College met defeat at the hands
of the Teachers by a score of 33 to
0, here on November 23.
The game was hard fought until
the last few minutes of play, when
the Teachers seemed to be able to
score at will without opposition
from the Braves. Twenty points
were racked up in the last quarter
for the teachers to increase their
lead of 13 to 0 to 33 to 0.
The first quarter was scoreless
with the Braves actually outplay
ing the Teachers all the way, but
this was only temporary because
Heith, sub-left half of the Jack
sonians, raced off his own tackle
for a 75 yard sprint to pay dirt
and a lead of 6 to 0. Wilson’s try
for the extra point was no good.
The half ended shortly afterwards
with the same 6 to 0 advantage ov
er the Braves.
At half-time the Cedartown High
School Band gave a stirring per
formance for the football fans and
captured the hearts of the music
lovers, as well as inspired the hep
cats, with its rendition of the
“Strawberry Blond”.
Sherrill kicked to Jacksonville to
open the second half with K. Smith
returning the ball 19 yards before
being stopped by Hill and Robin
son. The bull changed hands many
times before Chase intercepted a
pass on the W.G.C. 35 yard stripe
and started a march to the goal.
Pondley carried the ball over from
the 4th and Wilson converted for a
13 to 0 lead at the end of the quar
ter.
"Fumble, stumble, and fall’ char
acterized the Braves in the last
quarter and the Teachers took ad
vantage of this to cross the goal
line 3 times and converted 2 of
these into 20 points. D Smith was
the first to cross the goal line from
West Georgia’s 24. Wilson’s try for
the extra point was good. Hawkins
plunged over from the 2 after re
covering a fumble and Wilson again
converted. Chase took the ball on
the W.G.C. 17 and went across the
goal standing up. Wilson failed to
make his extra point and left the
score at 33 to 0 in favor of the
Teachers.
By this time the W.G.C. fans
were beginning to file out of the
stands, conceding defeat to a much
stronger team and hoping for a
better game next time, which, inci
dently, never came for the Braves.
