Foes Too Much For W.G.C.
Braves, Take 3, Drop 11
On the first road trip of the sea
son the Braves bowed to the strong
St. Bernard College quintet by a
score of 50 to 43. The Braves start
ed a drive in the closing minutes
of the game that brought them up
to a close race for the game. Wil
kerson was high point man with 10
tallies. Strickland for the Saints
marked up 23 points for the even
ing’s honors.
The second road trip of the
Braves went to defeat also. The
Riflemen of Ft. McClellan ran up
a score of 59 to 29. The Braves
were out played all during the game
and never gave the soldiers any
real competition. Small and Free
man tied for the high mark with
13 points each while Gilson rack
ed up 12 for the Braves.
The G. M. C. Bulldogs edged the
Braves out 41 to 40 in a give away
game by the referee.
The game > as very close, the
Braves leading, up to the last four
linnutOß of p aying time. In the
last half loUi. fc v*.iin:’cal i.ouls were
given the Bulldogs on si.iu..
offenses. Enough of the T fouls
were made to gain the one point
victory. Gilson stayed high point
man for the Braves and McColour
took honor for the Bulldogs. Both
scored 12 points.
The Piedmont College game will
probably stay in the players minds
longer than any other trip this
season. After the bus broke down
in Athens a U-Drive-It was rented
for six of the players to go on. The
Braves were hopelessly defeated
and outclassed as the 62 to 39 score
shows, but the game was an experi
ence worth witnessing.
The talent laden Ft. McClellan
Riflemen journeyed to W. G. C. on
January 27 to defeat the Braves
again 39 to 18. Outplayed all dur
ing the game, the Braves never
went on a scoring spree as the
Riflemen did, as the score shows,
but played defensive ball which
broke down as long shots were
made. Farowse was high point man
for the winners, Brumbelow for the
losers.
In one of the most thrilling
games ever to be played on the
W. G. C. court, the Braves narrowly
squirmed to a one point victory
over Berry College. The 35 to 34
victory came after a close game
that highlighted the Braves first
victory of the season. Brumbelow’s
field goal brought the Braves out
in front one point in the last ten
seconds of the game to climax the
thrilling spectacle.
In a fairly close game, the Abra
ham-Baldwin five rose to the top of
the State Championship list by
beating the Braves 49 to 42. This
was the Braves ninth loss of the
season. Pope, all-state center of
ABAC, took all honors as he racked
up 19 points for the night. Wil
kerson scored 12 points to be high
man for the Braves.
The Wolverines of Middle Geor
gia College pounced down for an
other victory as they tripped West
Georgia’s Braves 47 to 36. The con
quering wolverines took hold of the
game from the start and never once
trailed. The Braves were out-class
ed from the start and never gave
any indication of upsetting the fast
stepping Cochran lads.

Showing peak form of the season
the W. G. C. Braves sent G. M. C.
back to Milledgeville mourning over
a 53 to 33 defeat handed them from
the West Georgia quintet. The Bull
dogs had defeated the Braves once
before this season and were set for
a repetition, but when one man
marks up 23 points, such as Wil
kerson, that alone will spell defeat
for any team. Joyner hit the net
13 times to tally the Bulldogs high
spot.
In a high light attraction in At
lanta’s vast Sports Arena, the Pet
rels from Oglethorpe University
trampled the West Georgia Braves
55 to 31. The first portion of the
game was very close but as time
ran on so did the Petrels. Johnson
stripped the net for 14 tallies for
the Petrels while points were divid
ed rather evenly among the Braves.
After a 200 mile road trip, the
weary Braves fought hard but went
down in defeat at the feet of the
Wolverines of Middle Georgia.
Strickland, 6’ 4’ center was the
j* t.u 1.1 v.. lads after
racking up 30 points. St/.ckm:.-
plans to sign a baseball contract
with the Cleveland Indians as soon
as basketball season ends. Wilkin
son was top man for the Braves
with 14.
A return match with Gordon Mili
tary College also spelled defeat for
the much beaten Braves by a score
of 50 to 39. This victory of the Ca
dets was also accredited to the ref
eree. Outplaying the Cadets, the
Braves squandered their hopes in
the last few minutes when foul af
ter foul was called on the players
as well as the supporters from the
bench. Browning hit 17 markers for
the Cadets while Wilkerson’s 11
took honors for the Braves.
After missing two foul shots Jim
Burch dropped in a field goal to
pace the Braves to another victory
over Berry College at Rome. The
47 to 45 score shows the pace of
the hard fought game. The score
was tied up nine times in the last
quarter of the game. Both teams
played heads up ball and all points
were divided rather evenly among
the two teams.
In a score-free ball game at Tif
ton, the Horsemen of Abraham-
Baldwin chipped off a 69 to 61 vic
tory over the Braves. The Braves
hit the goal hard and often in the
last half and really had the ABAC
lads praying for the end of the
game. When time did run out ABAC
was leading 8 points, a very close
margin. Whittle marked up 21
points for ABAC while Yates, Wil
kinson, and Blankenship captured
13 each for the Braves.
Advanced Basketball
Glass Underway
The Advanced Basketball Class
is anew class in the Physical Edu
cation Department curriculum. It is
making long strides under the di
rection of Miss Sturgis.
There are forty-two girls enroll
ed in the class. The purpose is to
allow girls already skilled in bas
ketball techniques to participate
against girls of equal skill. It is
also organized to develop compe
tent basketball officials who will
be able to assist with games in
their own communities.
These students are getting prac
tice in refereeing, scoring, timing,
umpiring, and in learing new tech
niques.
The text which is being used for
instruction is the Official Basket
ball Guide of the National Section
in Women’s Athletics of the Ameri
can Association for Health, Physical
Education, and Recreation.
This course will terminate with a
standard written N. S. W. A. test on
rules and officiating.

Lunches At
Eastman Home
The West Georgia College basket
ball team was entertained at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. S. H. Hardin
at Eastman, Georgia February 8.
The tribe of basketeers visited
the home of Mr. and Mrs. Hardin
after the Middle Georgia game at
Cochran and had lunch there. The
food was excellent and delicious
and there was much more than
anyone could ask for at one meal.
Everyone enjoyed his lunch and
expressed his sincere thanks to Mr.
and Mrs. Hardin and Mrs. Cunning
ham, who assisted with the lunch,
in a letter which every member of
the party signed.
Mr. and Mrs. Hardin are the par
ents of Betty Ann Hardin, a well
known W. G. C. student.

SO YOU CALL THAT
VOLLEY BALL!
Volleyball is a team game, the
object of which is to serve the ball
over the net and to keep volleying
it back and forth across the net to
prevent it from touching the floor
within the players’ own court. This
information was taken from the
rule sheet bestowed on the 1:30
physical educational class by Miss
Sturgis.
Just what the team is to be com
posed of was not specified, which
is indeed a serious omission. Some
times you’d think Audrey’s team is
a herd of elephants after one pea
nut. Ow! Fellow team-mates, please
stop bouncing me on the floor! I
didn’t mean elephants, really!
And then, again, you’d think we
are the last word in dignity, (There!
now have I redeemed myself in the
eyes of those concerned?), and
shouldn’t dare lift more than one
hand to swat, I mean volley the
ball. At such a time as this, or most
any other time when she feels frus
trated, you can hear Audrey yell
“Con-Sarn It!”
But let’s have this comparatively
mediocre game and watch Hitch
cock and Weaver, with their re
spective teams, battle it out. They
have our undivided attention when
our eyes finally follow that ball,
for our ears have heard little be
sides their eager, piping, little voic
es in a continuous hum for, oh, so
long. Who are on the other teams,

FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 1947
I’ll tell the truth. I thought six or
eight hippopotami were jumping up
and down trying to shake off a few
hundred screaming wildcats. That
was the battle of Misses Hitch
cock’s and Weaver’s careers as vol
leyball team captains. The score,
which I discovered was the incen
tive for this hullabaloo, yielded a
couple of points to Hitchcock’s credit
beyond Weaver’s showing.
Whee! Lookit! (Yes, I know those
are childish expressions, but who
besides the scorekeepers doesn’t
lose her sophistication playing vol
leyball?) Miss Harrison just hit the
ceiling, with the ball, I mean. Yes
terday Miss Camp hit the floor.
Miss Harrison plays for Dot Owens’
team.
