OH I ROBIN HOOD
By Elizabeth Ross
Ho! Merry bowman! This is the day of thy frist instruction in the
art of archery, or skill with thy bow and arrow.
Now I would fain warn you of one point.. . that since thou shouldst
know the bow from the arrow, and the quiver from he bull’s eye, and
that thou shouldst know whiter to aim thy arrow.
Above is a picture of a fair
maiden, who, with many of her sis
ter bow-women, finds the mark
with the mighty bow. She, is in
deed a joyous lass, as well she
might be, for her mastery of the art
of archery, is one that comes from
the days of knights and fair ladies
and kings and castles and Sherwood
Forest.
Now, by faith, we next come to
the six important steps in shooting.
As Little John would likely tell you
they are drawing, which is pulling
the bow back; anchoring, fixing the
string under the chin; aiming, not
at the target but at a point distant
from the target; holding, merely
holding thy bow in position for a
few seconds; loosing, letting the ar
row fly; and the follow up, which is
retaining thy position at shooting.
Aye! Wnen tnou nast followed
these steps, is it not likely that thy
arrow wouldst strike the bull’s eye.
Now, stalwart companions I have
left out the first move in hurling
the arrow toward the target—be
hold I have failed to tell thee how
to secure thy string to thy bow.
Thou must bend the bow in posi
tion so that thou canst slip the loop
over the unstrung end of the bow.
Ho! the work is done.
Now, my friend ’tis time for the
frivolity to commence. Thou must
lock thine arrow against thy bow
string and pull it back to be anchor
ed on the chin. Ho! there, be thou
careful lest thy fingers be burned
or thy arm be stung, for if thou
cast aside thy care thy also cast
aside thy safety. Hast thou not oft
heard that thou must not point at
any person thy weapon? So it is
with this weapon, for with one mis
shot thou couldst put out an eye or
end a life. So proceed thou with
caution.
Carroll Theater
FOR THE BEST IN
ENTERTAINMENT
Perhaps thou hast heard of the
point of aim. Hast thou wondered
what this thing could be? Then
cease your wondering, for all thou
must do is listen to my words and
thou shall see as plainly as day. The
point of aim is the place at which
thou would aim in order to hit the
target. After thou hast found thy
point of aim, thou art ready to be
gin your shooting in earnest.
Only thy fingers must move . . .
not thy hand, for as I have before
witnessed, thou couldst sting or
burn them.
Now if thou would but follow
mine sage davice thou couldst, with
considerable practice, become a
marksman of such skill that per
haps thou couldst join the band of
Merry Men and live in Sherwood
Forest and shoot at the merry, mer
ry doe and perhaps at the king
himself.
The dying man gasped pitifully.
“Grant me one last request, Jane.”
he pleaded.
“Of course, Herb,” she said softly.
“Six months after I die I want
you to marry Joe,” he said.
“Joe?’’ she said in a shocked
voice. “I thought you hated him.”
“I do,” he said, and passed away.
