On The Ball
j; by
HARMON "SCOOP" SMITH
When yours truly first heard
about West Georgia entering the
newly formed Southern Junior
College Conference, I didn’t re
ceive it enthusiastically, but the
more I dug into the various as
pects of the conference, by means
of interviews with Coach Welch,
President Ingram and Major Rob
inson, of Marion Institute, I could
sec that it was definitely the best
thing that could happen for foot
ball at West Georgia.
There is no doubt in my mind
that, since this school cannot af
ford to offer athletic scholarships,
membership in a conference that
forbids them will be of great value.
Then all the colleges would be in
the same boat and the competition
be more evenly matched.

At the beginning of each year, a
number of sportswriters attempt
to give a summary of what will
happen to the world of sports
throughout the year. I am going
to give my opinions and answers
to some of the questions that will
prove pertinent to 1950.
1. Who will lead the major lea
gues in home runs?
Answer: Ralph Kiner, naturally.
2. How many will he hit?
Answer: He will break his own
record but not Babe Ruth’s.
3. Who will win the Major lea
gue pennant?
Answer: The Yanks and the
Cards.
4. Which one will win the World
Series, come October?
Answer: The Yankees, of COUR
SE.
5. Will Joe Louis regain his
title?
Answer: I want to quote Ed
Danforth on this: “He will if he
BRAVES ADD GAME
TO SCHEDULE
The West Georgia Braves added
another game to their schedule
announced Brave mentor “Shag”
Welch recently. The WGC team
will travel to LaGrange, Georgia
for a match with the Callaway
All-Stars, February 20.
The Callaway All-Stars is one
of the better amateur quintets in
this region and a bout with that
squad is sure to bring out plenty
of court thrills. The AH-Stars, a
team composed of the best play
ers among the Callaway mills em
ployees in LaGrange, has a few
ex-college players on its roster,
one of whom, Charles Blanken
ship, once played for West Geor
gia.

fights the present champ, Ezzard

6. Who will be the golfer of the
year?
Answer: Ben Hogan.
7. Who will play in the Rose
Bowl of January 1, 1951?
Answer: Michigan and your
guess is as good as mine.
8. Who will be the SEC champs
this fall?
Answer: LSU.
9. Who will be the SJCC
champs?
Answer: West Georgia has an
excellent chance.
10. Will anyone break Notre
Dame’s winning streak?
Answer: Only if they’re mighty
lucky, and I hope they are.

The news that Rome will field
a team in the Georgia-Alabama
league this season came as wel
come news to most of the baseball
fans in this region. Although the
City of Seven Hills is a bit re
moved from the rest of the league
and will add considerably to trav
eling expenses of most of the Ala
bama teams, it is a real base
ball town and has a large enough
population to pull in record
crowds. Also, ,there are enough
semi-pro players right around
Rome to insure that city of hav
ing a top-flight team.

Rumors are still flying about the
chances for a baseball team at
West Georgia. We sincerely hope
that this is not just wistful think
ing, as the campus is literally
swarming with talent. To name
but a few: Bill Cole, Bill Holla
day, Charles Perry, Grover C.
“Hot Shot” Adams, Ray Sarratt,
Green Williams, John Gilreath and
Bill Allison are supposed to be
good enough to play college ball.
Morris, Greenwood win
Spots on All-Conference
Jack Morris and J. W. Green
wood, two of West Georgia’s stel
lar football players won spots on
the All-Conference teams select
ed by the Aetlanta Journal.
Jack Morris, a brilliant tackle
from Calhoun, was the only Brave
player from WGC to make the
first string. His superlative play
at the tackle position was a spark
plug for the Braves during the en
tire season.
J. W. Greenwood’s swivel-hip
ped broken field running garner
ed for him the halfback slot on
the second team.
Oof the eleven players on the
All-Big Five Junior College Con
ference first team, four were from
GMC, four were from South Geor
gia, one from Middle Georgia, one
from Gordon and one from WGC.
WGC Gym Top Notch
The first victory West Georgia’s
Basketball team won this year
was carried out in our gym. It
was a remarkable game due not
only to the superior quality of our
team but also to the many mate
rial and technical improvements
made in the West Georgia Audi
torium. It is a fact worth mention
ing that with every issue of the
West Georgian, there came an ar
ticle or comment on improvements
in the gym. In the last couple of
weeks another touch of perfection
has been added. The floor now
is relined and covered by a brand
new Seal-O-San gloss coat which
very effectively prevents acci
dents, makes dribbling easier and
will increase gate receipts.

Two Intra-Mural
Systems To Be Used
Coach Henry “Shag” Welch an
nounced that there will be two
intra-mural systems functioning
this quarter. One will be the reg
ular intra-mural basketball lea
gue which is composed this year
of seven teams from the various
men’s dormitories and a few spe
cial teams. These teams will play
at night in the auditorium; The
schedule for this league is posted
on the window of the coach’s of
fice. The other intra-mural league
for the campus being promoted
by the Physical Education clesses.
Each period will be divided onto
four teams and the games will be
played in the regular Physical Ed
ucation period. While two teams
are playing the other two will di
vide up the duties of keeping time
and score and officiating the
game. The games will be played
in two sections—one half of the
game on one day and the other
half of it at the next period. Coach
Welch says by doing this and let
ting the boys themselves handle
the games that more of the funda
mentals of basketball will be
learned. The teams are to be di
vided up by dormitories if pos
sible. This program has great pos
sibilities and if everyone gives his
co-operation it is bound to be a
success. While on the subject of
basketball an dthe use of the gym,
might this writer say that for
those who play on the gym floor
and those who watch the games
it would be much nicer if the floor
would be clean at all times. Ev
eryone would help this situation
if he would only stay off the floor
with his street shoes on.
WGC Member of New Conference Sport
Football, basketball and other
inter-collegiate athletics at West
Georgia were given a boost recent
ly by the announcement that the
school had become a member of
the newly formed Southern Junior
College Conference. The main as
pects of the SPCC is that it does
not allow athletic scholarships or
any other subsidization because of
athletic ability.
There are eight teams in the
conference. They are West Geor
gia; Gordon, of Barnesville; Mid
dle Georgia, of Cochran, Ga.; Mar
ion Institute, of Marion, Ala.; St.
Bernard, of Cullman, Ala.; Snead,
of Boaz, Ala.; Martin, of Pulaski,
Tenn.; and Hiwassee, of Madison
ville, Tenn.
The president of the new confer
ence is Colonel Murphy, of Marion
Institute and the vice-president is
Mr. I. S. Ingram, of West Geor
gia.
As far as 1950 is concerned the
SPCC will have only football and
basketball bn its agenda but plans
are being laid out in hopes of add
ing inter-collegiate baseball in the
spring of 1951. Other sports such
as track and tennis may be added
in the future.
