Michael Article
In Social Studies
Dr. Richard B. Michael, Dean of
Men, and professor of Social Stu
dies at West Georgia recently had
an article published in the April
issue of Social Studies entitled,
“Teaching the American Histori
cal Myth in the Elementary
School.”
The article centered around the
theory that teaching historical data
such as George Washington and
the Cherry Tree, Plymouth Rock
and etc. could be taught as myth,
not as the truth.
The article suggest that events
such as this be taught as symbols
of a way of life. For instance, the
Cherry Tree story might empha
size the moral quality of truthful
ness rather than the actual hap
pening.
This interesting and timely arti
cle was based on research done
while Dr. Michael was doing his
graduate work at George Peabody
in Nashville, Tennessee.
4-H Club Elects Officers
The college 4-H club held a
meeting recently at which two of
next year’s officers were elected.
Abbie Turner will serve as presi
den and Betty Bowers as vice-pre
sident. The other two officers will
be elected from the freshmen
members next fall. The 4-H club
is looking forward to a success
ful year with these two new offic
ers who will be chosen in the fall.
Fourteen Freshmen
