Hemminger Named Homecoming Queen
Univ. Educators
Hold Clinic
On Campus
Joy Putnam, president of F.T.A.,
announced yesterday that the An
nual Meeting of Graduate Stu
dents from the University of Geor
gia training to be Instruction Su
pervisors will be held on the West
Georgia College Campus Novem
ber 4-6.
While here they will meet mem
bers of our staff who are con
cerned directly with the Teacher
Education Program. They will visit
Sand Hill, one session of the Col
lege in the Country at Unity
School, and Oak Mountain School.
This is a regular part of the cur
riculum of this group.
Those included in the group this
year are: Mrs.. Dorothy Ayers,
Chatham County; Mrs. Ardath
Bradshaw, Carroll County; Mrs.
Mildred Reynolds, Bleckley Coun
ty; Mrs. Mary Turpen, Stephens
County; and Miss Jane Woodruff,
Coweta County; and Mr. John
Burks, Richmond County.
University faculty accompany
ing this group are Dr. Johnnie V.
Cox and Miss Reda Burnham of
the Education Department.
These trainees have previously
taught school and are now work
ing toward a higher job in the edu
cation profession. Their observa
tion here is an annual clinic.
On Thursday afternoon, Novem
ber 5, at 4:00 o’clock, they will
be entertained at a tea in Man.-
deville Lobby. A group of student
leaders will serve the interns and
faculty while they get better ac
quainted and have a social hour.
Enrollment
Reaches 295
Miss Katie Downs, registrar
of West Georgia College, announc
ed today that the enrollment for
fall quarter was an increase of
52 students over the spring en
rollment and reached a height
of 295 students.
The major increase can be at
tributed to the 196 freshmen sign
ed up for classes as compared to
83 sophomores this year.
Miss Downs said most of the
increase could be attributed to the
increase in number of freshmen
women. Of the total now register
ed 118 are coeds as compared to
177 men.
Veteran enrollment also contri
buted to the increase. This year
37 veterans have registered at
West Georgia.
According to Miss Downs, day
students make up 92 of the 295
enrolled.
Of this total enrollment 14 stu
dents are Juniors and 2 are special
students who take only one sub
ject.

Marine Unit Considered
For West Georgia Campus
West Georgia College is being considered as the possible
site for a Marine Reserve Unit, Dean Row announced in his
office yesterday. The Marine Unit, which would be a sub
unit of the Reserve Unit already established in Rome, Georgia,
would be under the command of Mr. Aubrey Gilbert, local
attorney and a Lieutenant in the Marine Reserve, and Mr.
C. C. Perkins, a member of the Georgia State Legislature and
also a Lieutenant in the Marine Reserve. Both these men are
alumni of West Georgia College.
Last week Lt. Col. Henry D.
Strunk (officer in ohargb) and
Major R. R. Juby (Facility Offi
cer) of the U. S. Marine Reserve
Unit in Atlanta, Ga., inspected the
campus and the N.R.A. grounds,
where the boys’ dormitories were
previously located, as a possible
location for the Marine Platoon
Leaders Course which will be
sponsored by the U. S. MARINE
CORPS under the guidance of the
U. S. ARMED FORCES. Both Lt.
Col. Strunk and Major Juby ex
pressed high praise for the at
tention given the matter and show
ed much interest in the possibility
of West Georgia as the future
unit site.
Applications to use the campus
of West Georgia College have been
submitted to the Pentagon in
Washington and to the Board of
Regents of the University of Geor
gia.

Requirements for college men
to enlist in the Reserve Unit are
primarily those of age and enroll
ment. The student must be 17
years or more and must be be
tween 20 and 27 years of age
upon graduation. In addition, he
must be enrolled as a. regular
full-time college student, with ex
ceptions in the fields of Theolo
gy, Medicine, Dentistry, and Fine
Arts.
The plan and function of the
Unit will be similar to that of any
R.O.T.C. Unit. The student will be
enrolled in the Marine Reserve
and assigned to a Platoon Lead
ers Course. He will meet with this
unit on campus for drills at a per
iod of four (4) drills for two (2)
hours a week or two (2) drills for
four (4) hours a week. The student
enrolled in the unit will also at
tend two (2) summers or six (6)
weeks each at his choice of duty

Eleclions Held
House meetings have been held
for the purpose of electing officers
for this year from each dormitory.
Elected as officers for Adam
son Hall were: President, Nell
Ann Hemminger; Vice-President,
Nina Ward; Secretary, Barbara
Stubbs; Treasurer, Irene Parker;
and Proctor, Shirley Mintz.
Mapdeville Hall chose as their
officers Joy Putman, President;
Myra Abney, Vice-president; Tom
my Lewis, Secretary; Betty Ann
Jackson, Treasurer; Wanda Elgin,
Procter.
To represent Melson Hall in the
Student Council, Charles Essex
and Paul Rowe have been named.
Aycock’s officers for this year
include James Smith, President;
J. C. Johnson, Vice-President; Dan
Childers, Secretary; and Robert
Sinyard, Treasurer.
House officers at West Georgia
College are members of the Stu
dent Council. The duties of the
council members are: To build
self control; to set and maintain
a high standard of living and to
settle problems arising within the
group on a fundamental princi
pal.

Dance to Climax
Gala Weekend
Nell Ann Hemminger, Sopho
more at West Georgia, has been
named Homecoming Queen in an
election held by the entire Student
Body of West Georgia College.
Miss Hemminger, who hails from
Decatur, was crowned this after
noon by Dr. Ingram, President of
West Georgia, during the inter
mission of today’s game between
the West Georgia Braves and Hi
wassee College. Miss Hemminger
thus becomes the sixth Homecom
ing Queen in the history of the
college. The crowning was a ma
jor highlight of the afternoon’s
activties. Her maid of honor, also
named by the Student Body, is
Miss Patsy Sherwood. Members
of the Homecoming Court include:
Jpy Putnam, Calhoun; Tommye
Lewis, Calhoun; Mary Ruth Pul
liam, Decatur; Anita Morris, At
lanta; and Patricia Dickens, Tho
maston.
The activties of Saturday after
noon began at 1:388. p. IL with the
annual Homecoming Parade. Floats
from most organizations on cam
pus were planned. These floats
followed a procession that led
from the West Georgia campus
through Carrollton to the Carroll
ton football field. The lead float
was that of the Student Council
and included the Queen, Miss
Nell Ann Hemminger, her maid
of honor, Miss Patsy Sherwood,
and her court. The float follow
ing this included the cheerleaders,
and the other floats followed in
close order. The procession had a
police escort and was accompan
ied by the Bowdon High School
band.
The activities of this afternoon
were climaxed by the Kick-off at
3 p. m. in the game between the
West Georgia Braves and Hiwas
see College. Events preceding the
game today included the per ral
ly and bonfire Friday night at
eight o’clock on the football prac
tice field and a dance which was
held in the Dining Hall immediate
ly following the pep rally.
The climax of Homecoming
Dance tonight at 8:00 in the Col
lege Gym. This dance, which is
sponsored by the Faculty and So
phomore Class for the Freshman
Class, will be formal and will have
music furnished by Carlton Calver.
Tickets are still on sale today at
Mrs. Hay’s office. All Freshmen
are admitted free, except with
dates that are not Freshmen. The
ticket then is one dollar. Single
Sophomores and Juniors also pay
only one dollar, but Sophomore
and Junior couples must pay $1.50.
Decorations for the dance floor
and gym will be handled by the
Art Department under the guid
ance of Mr. Everett McKibben;
Director of Art at West Georgia,
and a student committee, headed
by Jeannette Morgan.
