New Science Building Under Construction
Science Building Nears Completion;
Will Be Ready for Fall Quarter
Mr. Atchley, supervisor of the
construction of the New Science
Building, announced recently that
it would be completed and ready
for use by the beginning of Fall
Quarter in September, ’54. The
Jones and Hardy Construction
Company in Montevallo, Ala., is
doing the work.
The building is a great addi
tion to the school and campus.
It will be used mainly for the
science classes; Chemistry, Phy
sics, and Biology. There will be
a laboratory for each of these
classes. Mr. Hazelgrove, Mr.
Ward, and Mr. Wirsing will have
much better working equipment
and more room for their experi
ments and classes in the build
ing.
On the second floor there is
a Lecture Room with elevated
seats which will be used by the
science classes. It is located in
the middle of all the rooms.
Also on the second floor there
is going to be several offices for
the science teachers and some of
the other teachers.
One of the things the students
are looking forward to is the
Student Union Room. There is a
large room with almost complete
glass walls on the first floor that
is to be used as a recreation hall.
The college store and the book
store are going to be located to
one side of this room. There is
going to be much more space us
ed for the snack-bar counter and
storage of books than is in the
present store. The students will
be glad to hear that a juke box,
coke machine, and cigarette vend
ing machine will be placed in the
Student Union Room.
Two new boilers have been in
stalled in the first floor which
have the capacity to heat the RA
building, the gym, the dining hall,
and that building.
There is also a dark room for
DEVOTED TO THE BEST INTEREST OF WEST GEORGIA COLLEGE
development of pictures and pho
togarphy work to be located in
the building. Besides this, the
plan calls for another classroom,
but as yet it has not been decid
ed who will use it.
In the plans there will also be
showers and restrooms for both
boys and girls, and a lounge con
nected to the Student Union
Room.

appearance will highlight the
numerous activities on the cam

dedication of the new $220,000
Science Building and Aycock Dor

of the college will also be present
since today is the annual West
Georgia College Parents Day. Par
ents of about two hundred stu
dents are expected to visit the
college and inspect the new build
ings and facilities.
There will also be a large group
of high school seniors from sur
rounding communities. Along
with them will be many of their
teachers, sponsors, and princi
pals. The classes that have been
invited to visit us today are from
the following schools: Douglas
County HiglOßowdon High, Car

Rica High, Roopville High, Mt.
Zion High, Whitesburg High,
Western High, Newnan High,
Bremen High, Centralhatchee
High, Franklin High, Buchanan

High, and Hiram High. A special
treat for these and the parents
and other visitors will be the

through the Administration Build

All of the visiting high school
students are West Georgia pros

to enter here after graduation
from their respective high schools.
West Georgia people should be on
the lookout today for anyone who
should need help in any way.
Most of the visitors will be in
completely pew surroundings
and will need some direction to
various buildings and spots on
the campus.
Everyone will certainly enjoy
the barbecue that will be held
at twelve o’clock on the cam

everyone at that time. No regular
lunch for students will be served
since the barbecue is for stu
dents as well as visitors.
This afternoon the Braves
baseball squad will tangle with
Georgia Southwestern College’s
diamond men. The Southwestern
team will probably give our boys
some stiff competition, but the
Braves are expected to pull
through for anothef win. The
tennis teams from W. G. C. and
Georgia Southwestern also will
be pitted against each other later
this afternoon. This is to be quite
a duel, because both teams are
