Fall Enrollment Expected To Reach New High
As College Opens With An Eve To The Future

West Georgia’s newly completed,
air conditioned science building is ready
for occupancy this quarter. The build
ing, measuring 138 feet by 62 feet, con
tains some 21,000 square feet of floor
space. The facility will house seven
classrooms, two mechanical drawing,
Government Agency Approves
Two New Housing Facilities
The U. S. Commnity Facilities Administration ap
proved a $792,000 college housing loan to West Georgia
for construction of two new dormitories, one for men
and one for women.
The announcement came in a
telegram from Senators Herman
Talmadge and Richard Russell
The West Georgia lean was the
biggest of seven approved for
Georgia colleges.

Dramatic Group
Sets 'The Miser"’
As Initial Play
The Alpha Theta dramatic so
ciety, which produces three
plays each year, has announced
its fall production. The group
will present Moliere’s French
comedy, The Miser. Dates for
the production, under the direc
tion of Wallace Buice, are set
for November.
Alpha Theta is officially open
ing its membership drive. Any
student interested in play pre
riacticn should contact Mr. Buice.
Tryouts for The Miser will take
place during the opening days
of the college term. The times
and locations for these auditions
will be announced through use
of the official bulletin boards.
Mr. Nelson Carpenter, new ad
dition to the West Georgia staff,
will assume the duties of co
sponsor of Alpha Theta this
year. Mr. Carpenter is also ex
pected to do some directing.

said preliminary plans have al
ready been completed, and that
final plans will now be drawn
by Bilbro-Roddenberry and Tal
ley of Columbus, architects for
the two buildings.
Dr. Boyd said he expected con
struction to get underway some
time early in 1963, and that
“we would hope that the build
ings can be completed in time
for use during the 1963-64
school year.”
The women’s dormitory will be
located on the front campus
drive between Melson Hall and
the Gunn House.
The men’s dormitory will be
located beyond and to the right
of Aycock Hall on the back
campus. With Aycock and Row
Hall, now under construction, the
new facility will form a three
dormitory complex in that area
for men students.

Parkman to Direct
Sports Publicity
Ralph Parkman, Sports Editor
for The West Georgian, will
serve as Director of Sports Pub
licity at West Georgia College
this year.
Mr. Parkman, a senior, is also
Sports Editor for The Times
Free Press and The Carroll
County Georgian, local Carroll
ton newspapers.

Miss Wanda Vickery
Vickery Named
Chieftain Head
The publications committee
has approved the appointment of
Miss Wanda Vickery to the posi
tion of Editor in Chief of the
1963 Chieftain.
Miss Vickery is a junior from
Senoia, Georgia. She is majoring
in teacher education and has
been an active member of West
Georgia’s student body.
During the 1961-62 school
year, Miss Vickery was an ac
tive participant in the Debate
Club. During the same school
year, she was elected to the
Chieftain beauty court.
Miss Vickery begins her duties
this fall and is expected to at
tend, along with representatives
from The West Georgian, the
annual publications workshop of
the Southern Universities Student
Government Association. The
two day conference, to be held
at Auburn University, will take
place in late October.
A record enrollment, anew building program, new
faculty members and many campus improvements greet
fall quarter students as West Georgia begins its twenty
ninth year with an eye to the future. This is evident
bv the construction now underway and the ground
breaking which will occur during this year.
A record enrollment of 1,200
is expected to invade this peace
ful countryside within the next
few days.
In order to accommodate the
influx of persons seeking a col
lege education, West Georgia’s
downtown housing association
made plans for the second year
to accommodate some 220 male
students for whom there is no
room on campus.
Some fifteen new faculty mem
bers have been employed, sev
eral with Doctor’s degrees.
Again this is with an eye to
the future.
In the building program, the
new science building, fully air
conditioned, is now open and will
be occupied during this fall
quarter. Row Hall, the $500,000.00
men s dormitory under construc
tion on the back campus, is ex
pected to be completed by the
Spring quarter. Row Hall, named
in the memory of the late presi
dent Dr. William H. Row, will
accommodate 180 men. Federal
loans have enabled West Georgia
to begin plans to construct two
new dormitories, one for men
and one for women, during this
school year.
A busy summer on behalf of
the maintenance personnel has
produced numerous improve
ments. The complete renovation
of Melson Hall will improve liv

Canterbury Club Begins V ear
With Gala Dance and Party
The West Georgia Canterbury Club, sponsored by
Saint Margaret’s Epicsopal Church of Carrollton, will
begin its year’s activities with a gala dance to be held
Monday night, September 17, at the Sunset Hills Coun
try Club. _
The dance, featuring a well
known combo from this area,
wili carry a fifty-cent cover
charge per person. This charge
Will be applied to the cost of
the use of the club facilities.
All Freshmen and other return

tend the aflair which will begin
at 7:30 p.m. and end at 10:00
p m
During the Fall quarter the
Canterbury club plans to stage
several programs on various
themes. The first of these themes
is “The Student’s role in a
World of Revolution.” The speak
ers anticipated during this series
are Carl Sanders, Ralph McGill
and the British Consulate from
Atlanta.
Later programs will revolve
around the social revolution. In
October, the club members plan
a trip to the Negro Atlanta Uni
versity. There they will meet

Covington, Harris
Begin As Deans
Of Men and Women
Dr. James D. Covington begins
bis first year at West Georgia
at the opening of the fall quart
er. Dr. Covington will assume
the restored post of Dean of
Men.
Dr. Covington is from Nash
ville, Tennessee although a na
tive of Kentucky. He received
B. S. degree from Auburn Uni
versity and his M. A. degree
from Vanderbilt University. His
Ed. D. degree was earned at
Auburn.
Before coming to West Geor
gia, Covington served as a coun
sellor on vocational rohabilita

meeting of all new and old
staff members Thursday evening,
September 20, at 6:00 p. m. in
the Student Offices on the ground
floor of the administration build
ing. AH of those students in
terested in writing for the West
Georgian should make every ef
fort to attend this meeting. It
will be imperative that all mem
bers rejoining the staff attend
this meeting.
Circle K Club
Plans to Assist
In Orientation
The Circle K Club, college sub
sidiary of Kiwanis International,
will begin its schedule of this
year’s service projects during
the week of orientation. Circle
K members will be on hand t i
answer questions, give dire< *
tions and aid wherever needec,
The blue and gold Circle K arm
bands will identify members of
the organization who are select
ed on a basis of scholarship,
leadership and character.
The organization, headed by
Noel Brcwn, president, is plan
ning an overall “expansion of
service” program for the year.
