THE WEST GEORGIAN
SUMMER WORK PROGRAM
Students Aid Workers
In Campus Improvement
By W. H. SMITH
West Georgia College took another important step this summer in developing
its student work scholarship program. Through the efforts of Dr. Emory Holland,
Dean of Students, and other administrative and staff personnel, part time and full
time jobs on the college campus were offered to male students.
Dr. James E. Boyd, President
of the College, gave his full
support to this new endeavor
and was responsible for making
this program possible. Mr. Dor
ris Jones, Director ol Main
tenance, played an important
role in helping develop and over
seeing the summer operation.
Mr. Bob Townley served as fore
man of the group.
Several of the participating
students carried a full or part
time class schedule and worked
only half a day. Others worked
at the job full time. The stu
dents who participated were Bob
Townley, Scott Rutherford, Tom
my Marks, Joe Kitchens, Lan
ny Benson, Don Ruff, W. H.
Smith, and Bob Refo. Besides
giving these students a chance
to earn extra money this sum
mer, the jobs offered them an
opportunity to become more
familiar with the maintaincnce
operation of the college and to
understand problems facing this
department.
This group undertook various
projects throughout the summer
and proved themselves quite val
uable to the Maintenance Depart
ment and the college. Perhaps
their largest and most time con
suming undertaking was the re
novating of Melson Dormitory.
This does not meaq (hat our
small group of students are re
sponsible for all the changes in
Melson this year; but it does
mean thtat they spent many
long, hard hours working -side
by side with the skilled laborers
who were responsible for doing
the job. The Melson job is not
the only worthwhile thing the
students accomplished this sum
mer. They removed stumps from
the front campus, cleared the
area to which the President’s
home has been moved, helped
move the physics and chemistry
equipment into the New Science
Building, and many others. Quite
often, the group split up and
its members served as assist
ants to the regular mainten
ance crew.
Several amusing incidents oc
curred within the group this
summer. Townley’s Troopers
became a tag the boys chose
for themselves. It was quite ?
familiar sight to see Bob Town
ley marching across campus fol
lowed by an obedient group of
five or six of his “troopers.”
Bob Refo adopted four baby
squirrels, and when he and Joe
Kitchens began running low on

food, the little squirrels very
mysteriously began to die. Soon
they were all dead. The other
boys still wonder just how hard
up Bob and Joe got for food.
Another amusing sight was to
