MAA Signs Up Over 200
For Intramural Sports
Intramural sports for men at West Georgia College
began anew year this week and, according to Coach
Tom D’Armi, things couldn’t look brighter. Over two
hundred male students reported for action in football,
the first of some 15 activities being planned.
“A year ago, the prospects for
a good intramural program at
West Georgia were few,” stated
Coach D’Armi. “Now,” he con
tinued, “we can easily boast a
program that is second to none
in participative interest. ’
Despite the enthusiasm shown
toward the coming year. Coach
D’Armi is the first to admit that
last year’s records are hard to
beat.
In its initial year of participa
tion, the Intramural program
consisted of 13 activities with a
total of 3,264 games being played.
There was an average participa
tion in the activities of 102 per
cent.
The activities offered last year
included: foot ball, horseshoes,
volleyball, Christmas Relays, tug
of wars, basketball, ping-pong,
foul shooting, bowling, softball,
track, swimming, and tennis.
Present plans call for the ad
dition of wrestling and weight
lifting to the above list.
SAME SEVEN
The Men’s Athletic Association,
an organization that provides a
good substitute for the social or
ganizations at larger schools, is
once again divided into seven
tribes.
The competitive spirit that
each tribe carries to the athletic
field wilh them from day to day,
is according to Coach D’Armi,
the one thing that has led to the
success of the entire intramural
program.
“You would think it was the
day of the old west when Indian
tribes were in a constant strug
gle for recognition as the best,’
stated the intramural director.
Entering the present year of
activity, the Apaches, much like
the original owners of this tribal |
name, occupy this number one
position. They earned this title
after winning a majority of last
year’s events.
Like the victorious tribe of the

The Apaches, though weakened
by the loss of key personnel,
are beating the drums of victory

‘‘There’s no predicting the out
come of any one of 15 activities
this fall,” stated Coach D Armi

AND THERE WERE THE MULTITUDES! This is
the only thing that can be said about the mass assembly
of male athletes that reported to the athletic field for
pictures last Thrusday. One person said, “I didn’t know
we had this many students in school, much less men!”
Well, we do. Number is really
inmaterial when you think of
the percentage of participants
from the masses. The fact that
over 90 percent of the male stu
dents are participating in ath
letics is important.
ALL SMILES
The apparent success of the
Men’s Athletic Association after
one year of existence would bring
cheer to anyone who is even
slightly interested in athletics.
One particular gentleman,
Coach Tom D’Armi, was more
than slightly cheerful when he
looked at the assembly of over
two hundred male students
dressed in the colors of their re
spective tribes.
"A year ago, I would never
have expected this,” stated
Coach D’Armi. A year ago, the
picture wasn’t quite as bright.

FLAGS ADDED
For protection purposes as well
as adding color to the game, the
old touch game of football has
been shoved aside by modern
flag football.
“We feel that bv using the
flags, we’ll have less injuries,
fewer arguments, more scoring
and a whole lot better games,”
stated Coach D’Armi.

West Georgia in time to hear
the cry of "why can’t the male
students have an intramural pro
gram comparable to that of the
women?”
He wasted little time in orga
nizing such a program. Starting
slowly and gaining steam as the
year progressed, the Men’s Ath
letic Association had all the mak
ings of success.
This fall, tradition provided the
start needed lor another success
ful year. Freshmen came to West
Georgia with the question, "how
do I get in a tribe?”
Those who, at the time, haven’t
developed an interest in the pro
gram, will probably find their
place in at least one of the many
activities before the year is over.
Reason enough for smiles? I
think so.

Tom Vassy Scholarship Fund
Created As Memorial Project
A scholarship fund for students of West Georgia
as a memorial to the late Tom K. Vassy has been in
itiated by a group of persons who participated* with
Mr. Vassy through the years on the various studycades
sponsored by the college.
The purpose of the scholarship
fund is to provide assistance to
worthy students who want to
attend West Georgia College. A
scholarship up to S3OO will be
awarded each year to a student
selected by the faculty scholar
ship committee at the college.
A special committee has been
formed to handle the fund and
accept voluntary contributions
from the public. The committee

is several years older than the
men’s and continues to he one

The activities provided for the

male’s and the competitive spirit
is just as strong.
