An unidentified Shawnee back goes for big yard
age in their touchdown drive aga’ost the Apaches. The
Shawnee won the game by a score of 9 to 6.
Shawnees Defeat
Leading Apaches
The Apache football dynasty at West Georgia Col
lege received a crushing blow Wednesday when they
lost their first regular season game in two years to the
Shawnees, 9 to 6.
A thirty yard field goal at
tempt on the last play of the
game was all it took to ruin the
Apaches chance of a second con
secutive perfect season.
Not only was it the last play
of the game that beat the
Apaches, but it was also theii
last opportunity to chalk up a
regular season win.
GO BEHIND
A team that had only one
touchdown scored on them this
season, the Apache defense fal
tered in the closing minutes of
the first half and they yielded
a second tally.
For the first time this season,
the Apaches were behind. The
play that did it was a twenty
yard pass that landed in the
out-stretched arms of Bobby
Cunnincham.
The same lad who put the
Shawnees out front with his pass
grab in the endzone, tried to
boot the ball through the up
rights for the point after. The
kick was no good.
The Apaches got over the
shock of being behind during the
half and came on strong in the
opening drive of the second half.
After taking the second half
kickoff, the Apaches initiated a
70 yard drive that ended in the
Shawnee endzone.
With a fourth down situation
facing them just inside the Shaw
nee 20, Gary Holmes dropped
back and spotted Steve Norris
open on the goal line. •
RALPH PARKMAN Sectional Editor
The pass was perfect and the
score was tied at 6 to 6. Holmes
took the ball on a fake kick for
the point after and tried to find
daylight around right end. His
flag was pulled on the five.
LITTLE HOPES
After the Apaches marched
down under a full head of steam
for the tieing touchdown, there
was little doubt but what they
would eventually win the game.
The men in red drove into
Shawnee territory several more
times but were unable to move
across for the winning tally.
With less than three minutes
remaining in the game, the
Shawnee took over on their own
twenty yard line and began to
move. With only four plays left
in the game, they had a first
down on the Apaches ten.
The big red line tightened et
this point and the next three
plays found the Shawnee operat
ing from the twenty.
With one play remaining irt
the game and a tie the probable
outcome, the Shawnees called
for the impossible —a field
goal.
Cunningham, who had missed
clearing the crossbar by some
five yards on the extra attempt,
was called on to try and give
the Shawnee a win.
Though people are still shak
ing their heads in disbelief, the
twenty-seven yard field goal at
tempt was good with several
feet to spare.

A Look at
Area Sports
with RALPH PARKMAN
Due to numerous requests, I should like to take a few
moments of your time to express my sentiments con
cerning the brand of football played by the APACHES
in the West Georgia intramural program.
Organization is a wonderful
thing. In fact, it can be rightly
I said that no major accomplish
| ments can lake place without a
certain degree of organization.
Taking this one word as a
foundation, we can easily see
why the famed Apaches won the
football championship last sea
son and are presently out in
front of the pack this year.
They want to win!!!! But, tins
is not all. They “work” to win.
Through the unmeasurable de
sire and organized efforts put
forth by the Apaches, they do
win.
NO APOLOGIES
Unlike the average official wlvi
breaks his neck to apologize to
the Apaches every time he is
forced to penalize them (which
isn’t very often), I will make
no effort to apologize for my
opinion of the manner in which
they go about winning.
It is hard to concieve, at least
to me, why victory is so im
portant that it sometimes changes
man to animal. How can win
ning be so important to a per
son that he loses all composure
and resorts to the tactics of v
savage beast?
I’m by no means saying that

Jameson, and Charlotte Channel.
A definite theme has not been
selected but it will be in keep
ing with the Christmas reason.
The dance is sponsored prim
arily for the benefit cf those
in this area who are less for
tunate than we. Therefore, tK*
WAA has set an admission price
of fifty cents per person or a
gift (non-perishable foodstuff,
toy, clothes, etc.) equivalent in
value to fifty cents. These items
will be distributed to those iu
need with the hope that some
one’s Christmas will be happier
because of the sponsoring or
ganization.
Mr. Gary Holmes, president of
the Men’s Athletic Association,
has volunteered the assistance of
his organization in helping U
sponsor this dance.
Horseshoe Event
Set For W. A. A.
Young ladies interested in par
ticipating in the forthcoming
horseshoe tournament should
register with Miss McNabb in
the physical education office.
Dates for the event are No
vember 15-November 20,
There will be two tournaments
singles and doubles so reg
ister as individuals and as part
ners. Points will be given to
those participating twenty
five points for first place, fif
teen points for second place and
ten points for third place.
The horseshoe contest is a
“first” for the women’s intra
mural program. So much inter
est has been created by the
men’s tourney now in progress
that the women have requested
a similar tourney for them. Prac
tices will begin soon for the
1 young ladies.
the members of the Apache
team are a bunch of animals.
What 1 am saying is that
when the chips are falling
against them, there is no limit
to what they will do to win.
An otherwise polished ball of
organization or perfection rapid
ly tarnishes into a snarl of re
bellion when defeat confronts the
red clad warriors.
They’ll use fist, elbows, knees,
feet, and mouth to win if it
bcomes necessary. If not, they
are content to play flag football
the way it was designed.
TIMELY?
I had long felt that the right
time to write this article would
not come along. Had it not been
for the Shawnee effort last Wed
nesday, I probably wouldn’t have
written it.
It was necessary that the
Apaches lose a game before crit
icism of their action would war
rant any attention. If they had
defeated the Shawnee, this
article would be laughed off as
an excuse for not winning.
The Apaches don’t need force
to be recognized. They have an
abundance of talent that is cap
able of winning within the rules.
If this can’t be done, then show
your power by being good losers.
