West Georgian
Looking Back
By Barbara Ezelle
The following items are based on issues of the West
Georgian dating from November, 1938, to October, 1939.
In 1938 the first varsity athle-
tic team had no name. Natural- 1
ly the coach and the administra
tion wanted a permanent name
for the athletic team of West
Georgia. Accordingly, an elec
tion was held and various names
were submitted to the Student
Body. At first “Hill Billies” was
decided upon. Later the team
was called the “West Georgia
Goats.” Then the name “Braves”
was selected after it was sug
gested by President Ingram be
cause of the rich Indian tradi
tion and lore connected with the
college.
The dedication of the West
Georgia Rural Arts Building was
on January 5, 1939.
Women’s suits and coats were
cleaned and pressed for 50c and
sweaters for 25c.
The West Georgian won First
Class Honor Rating by the As
sociated Collegiate Press in open
competition with junior college
bi-weeklies in the 1938-39 contest.
Permanent waves were $1.75
and up at the Alien-Mount Beauty
Shop.
