Each year the Southwire Cit
izenship Awards are presented
in recognition of outstanding
citizenship, leadership, and
service to the school and the
student council of West Geor
gia College.
Because of the outstanding
contributions and services
made this year by two differ-,
ent clubs, they each will be
the recipient of an award. The
award is based on service to
the community and the college
campus. Circle K contributed a
lot to the improvement of the
campus, and Alpha Phi Ome
ga to the community.
Individual awards are pre
sented to one outstanding
young man and one outstanding
young woman from West Geor
gia. This year A1 Cohen, a sen
ior from Atlanta, and Carol
Mowell, a junior from De
r, were presented these

Dr. Mead Comes to Campus
For Tuesday Night Leture
Dr. Margaret Mead lnternationally famous as an an
thropologist, psychologist, author, and lecturer will speak
at West Georgia College next Tuesday night, May 26, at 8
p. m. in the college auditorium.

Dr. Mead’s appearance at
the college is being sponsored
by the Division of Education,
the Department of Adult Edu
cation, and the Department of
Psychology.
DEGREES
Curator of Ethnology at the
American Museum of Natural
History in New York and ad
junct professor of anthropology
at Columbia University, Dr.
Mead holds degrees from Bar
nard College and Columbia Uni
versity, as well as honorary
doctorate degrees from many
colleges and universities.
She has been professor and
visiting professor at numerous
colleges and other institutions
through the years, as well as
serving in various capacities
with various international orga
nizations.
She is author and co-author
of many books, studies and
monographs, and has been
prominent in the preparation of
several specialized films. She
has a number of books and
projects in progress at the mo

Seaholt Takes
SUSGA Chair
Wayne Seabolt of Fairburn,
president of the Student Gov
ernment Association of West
Georgia College, was elected
vice-chairman for the state of
Georgia for the Southern Uni
versities Student Government
Association last week at the
annual convention in Biloxi,
Mississippi.
SUSGA has a vice-chairman
for each state involved, and
the vice-chairmen comprise the
executive council. While at the
convention Seabolt participated
jin a panel discussion on “the
role of student government in
schools.” Dr. Emory Holland,
Dean of Students at West Geor
gia College, was moderator for
the program.

gia’s delegation were Ken Mc-
Innis of Cedartown, vice-presi
dent of the West Georgia stu
dent government; Pat Fulton of
Mableton, secretary-treasurer
of the student government; ;
and Celeta Estes of Carrollton,
editor-elect of the West Geor
gian.

Groundbreaking Ceremonies
Informal Discussion Planned
History will be made tomorrow afternoon when United
States Attorney General Robert Kennedy will speak on the West
Georgia College campus. The announcement was made by Dr.
James E. Boyd, president of the college.
Mr. Kennedy has accepted an
invitation from President Boyd
to speak at groundbreaking
ceremonies for the interfaiths
chapel, which will be named
the John F. Kennedy Interfaith
Chapel in memory of the At
torney General’s brother, the
late President John F. Kennedy.
Mr. Kennedy will arrive at
Dobbins Air Force Base in
Marietta at 12:30 p.m. He will
immediately proceed to Car
rollton by air, and will arrive
at West Georgia College at
1:00 p.m. for the groundbreak
ing ceremonies.
At 1:40 Mr. Kennedy will
visit in the home of President
and Mrs. Boyd for a rest
period. Mr. Kennedy will meet
with delegates from southern
colleges at 2:25 p.m. to discuss
the fund drive for the John F.
Kennedy Memorial Library.
There will be an informal
question and answer period
for students and faculty at 2:40
in the gymnasium. Radio tech
nicians and TV cameramen
will be on hand to record this
and other happenings of the
day.
The Attorney will leave Car
rollton at 3:30 p.m. to return
directly to Washington, D. C.
The chapel, which was donat
ed to the college by the Cath
olic Church of Our Lady of
Carrollton, has been the dream
of the Carroll-Haralson Minis
terial Association and area lay
leaders for many months.

Dr. Folger To Deliver Address
For Commencement Exercises

Dr. John Kenneth Folger Sr., Dean of Florida State Uni
versity, and a past West Georgia student, will deliver the com
mencement address at West Georgia on Friday, June 5, at 10:30
a. m. in the gymnasium.
Dr. Folger received the B.A.
degree in political science from
Emory University, his M.A. de
gree in sociology from the Uni
versity of North Carolina, and
his Ph.D. degree in sociology
from the University of North
Carolina.
His past positions include As
sociate Director for Research
and Programs, Southern Re
gional Education Board; Asso
ciate Director for Research,
Southern Regional Education
Board; Research Associate of
the Southern Regional Educa
tion Board; and Chief, Techni
cal Services, Division, Human
Resources Research Institute,

May 27 at 7:00 at the Tasty
Grill. Entertainment will be
furnished by a group of sing
ers from Griffin who will pre
sent a hootenanny, and all
membrrs, prospective mem
bers, and dates are invited to
attend.
The cost per plate is 51.25,
and the money must be given
to Martha Brown, Gloria Ed
monson, or Betty Jean Keene
by Monday, May 25.
