Kennedy Interfaitli Chapel Sees
Many Changes During Slay Here

The John F. Kennedy Memorial Interfaith Chapel has seen
many changes sißce its dedication on the West Georgia College
campus a year ago.
The n o n-denominational
chapel is being used exten
sively by students of all
faiths. The building was
brought to the college cam
pus as the result of a proj
ect of a Carrollton citizens
committee.
Meetings of campus relig
ious organizations are held
regularly in the chapel. Once
a week a mass for members
of the Newnan Club is con
ducted and a communion
service is held for the Epis
copal students. The Baptist
Student Union, the Wesleyan
Foundation, and the West
minister Fellowship also pre
sent programs in the chap
el.
The chapel, which was
built in the early 1900’s on
the corner of South White
street and West avenue, was
originally an Episcopal
Church. It was sold in 1953
when the Episcopalians out
grew it, and then was used
by the Catholics of the com
munity.
In 1963 the Catholics also
moved to a larger building,
and the chapel was donated
to the college for use as an
interfaith chapel.
It was named the John F.
Kennedy Memorial Interfaith
Chapel, and the then— At

of 1964.
Standing on the east end
of the campus, the chapel
outwardly has the same ap
pearance it did as an his

initial refurnishing work has
been done and there are plans
for further renovation
New tiling has been laid,
and the benches have been
reconditioned. Another coat
of paint is to be added.
Mr. Harmon Tolbert, di
rector of plant and business
operations, notes that one of
the early sub-projects of the
overall campus landscape
program is the beautifica
tion of the grounds about the
chapel. A garden center will
donate shrubs for the proj
ect, he says.
Gifts to the chapel have
been received from several
sources. A pulpit Bible is be
ing donated to the chapel by
the Episcopal Bishop of the
Diocese of Atlanta, accord
ing to the Reverend Don Har
rison of St. Margaret’s Epis
copal Church. Mrs. Harrison
is contributing the altar hang
ings.
One person has promised
to donate carpeting for the
aisle.
