May 17, 1968 Glenn Mitchell Civil Disorder Threatens U.S. Pride In Outbreaks of Rioting in Major Cities In the United States today we are being plagued by a tremendous outbreak of civil disorders which threaten to strip this country of every ounce of its pride. Riorts have been widespread throughout the United States and the end seems far in the future. NO GIFT The Negro problem is not anew one to this country. A definite so cial and economic change is in evitable and will come about in time. Social change is a slow and tedious process and the Negro leaders seem to be trying to shove this change down our throats. Many peoples of today are feel ing the obligation to give mone tary aid to this oppressed race and aid the process along. Asa matter of point, Marlon Brando contributed 10% of his yearly in come to SCLC. Also Johnny Car son gave 1% of his income which will amount to something over SIO,OOO. These men are to be commended for their courageous stands for what they feel is right. The only problem lies in where the money will be applied. If a race wants gmmm ANNUAL HONORS BANQUET, held for the three campus honor societies, was hosted by the SGA on May 13. Groups represented were Phi Sigma Mu, freshmen’s honor society, Delta Phi Beta, frosh women’s honor society, and Accolade, junior women’s honor society, Everything For Your Sweet Tooth AT McGEE'S BAKERY ON THE SQUARE CARROLLTON something, giving it to them will not help. MUST WORK If a child has to work for some thing dear, he will treasure this object much more than if it is given to him. Again, the Negro must not be given everything to his liking; he must work for at least some of the change neces sary. The recent rioting is a disgrace to any race, any color, or per son who would stoop to loot and burn the cities of the U. S. The tragedy here is the lack of law en forcement which allows this sort of thing to continue. The peo ples of the day have lost almost all respect for the law. They know that nothing will be done to them even if they are arrested. WHITES TOO I am not singling any race lor Dr. James Emory Boyd, president of the col lege and Dr. George Walker, dean of the col lege, were on hand at the banquet. Dr. Judson Ward, vice president of Emory, delivered a speech entitled “You As Leaders of Tomor row.” Tasty Grill Great Food, Great Service Hamburger Steaks Each one a full pound of freshly ground beef. Food To Fit The College Taste Closed On Monday Dixie St. Carrollton, Ga. Phone 832-9183 THE WEST GEORGIAN these misdoings. Whites as well as blacks are involved in these acts of violence. 1 am only con demning the acts themselves. Dr. Martin L. King had great ideas and preached non-violence, but the trails of destruction he left behind speaks for itself. Life in the U. S. today is cer tainly not heaven. There are many things which make life here all but unbearable. However, one must consider the alternatives before a rash judgment is passed on the country as a whole. It could be a lot worse than it is now. The peoples of this country must work together to resolve differ ences, not to hold prejudices be tween races. Petitions must be given to all races to be more open minded and accept the facts life has to offer. My only hope is that all people will work together rather than against one another to progress for the good of all.
