Braves Netmen Place
Second in Conference
The West Georgia College netmen under Coach Ed Lambert par
ticipated in the conference tournament on Thursday and Friday of last
week. The Braves brought home second place despite the bad luck
that plagued them.
On Wednesday night in Valdosta,
where the conference matches
were held, our bad luck began.
Longi Vickers received fairly se
vere lacerations of his right
wrist. This extremely unfortu
nate accident necessitated the
forfeiture of Longi’s number
three singles and number three
doubles with Ken Dixon. Despite
the unfortunate accident to Vick
ers, the team did manage to take
second place in total points.
SCORING
The conference’s method of
scoring gives one point for vic
tories and one for each bye that
a team has. Byes are determined
by the regular season record.
Anyone having the best season
record would get the bye and also
the point for the bye.
West Georgia’s number one, A1
Robertson, was beaten by Val
dosta’s Anderson in the semi
final round. In this bracket Val
dosta entered two players and
therefore won the bracket with
out any trouble. In conference
championship play, a set to just
ten games is played. The first
one to win ten games and win by
two games takes the victory.
FINAL ROUND MATCHES
Gary Wood, the only member of
West Georgia’s team not to get
a bye the first round made it to
the finals by beating Bellury of
Southwestern 11-9 in the semi
finals. Wood lost in the finals to

On Saturday, Piedmont College
came to West Georgia for two
games. The first game was lost
3-2, and the second game was a
15-0 stomp of the Piedmont team.
The first game was also the first
game lost on West Georgia’s new
field.
On the mound for the Braves
was Jim Collins in the early game.
Collins went all the way and took
the loss. For Collins, normally a
reliever, this was his first start
of the season.
One reason for the loss was the
lack of hitting to back up Collin’s
pitching. The leading hitting of
the game was from the bat of
Mike Murphy who had two hits
for three trips to the plate. Col
ins helped his own cause by col
lecting another hit himself.
SECOND GAME
The second game sounaea more
like the Braves. This game was
won by the resounding score of
15-0. Toeing the rubber for the
team in this game was Ronald
“Gramps” Royal.
Gramps pitched five innings, al
lowing only one hit and giving up
no runs. In the sixth inning Ger
ald Lewis was placed in the game
to pitch the remaining two in
nings.
Hitting to support the fine pitch
ing performances was better. Al
most all of the members of the
team were getting hits. After
this game the team statistics
were substantially raised.
In the late inning, the game was
Dixon of Valdosta State 10-5.
Number three singles, as it has
been stated, was forfeited due to
the injury of Vickers. The points
for Longi’s bye was given, al
though Longi did not play. Mal
lory Jones made it to the finals,
but lost to Valdosta Sate’s Pol
lack.
Two wins were picked up in sin
gles competition. Van Burgin
played Norris of Southwestern in
the semi-final round and defeat
ed him 10-5. In the final round
Van completely demolished Ro
mine from Valdosta State 10-1 to
take West Georgia’s first win.
Ken Dixon also took a victory
from his opponent from La-
Grange. To get to the finals, Ken
beat Paulk of Valdosta 10-8. He
then took a 10-6 victory from
LaGrange’s Moseley for West
Georgia’s second singles victory.
In the best match of the tourna
ment, Robertson and Wood, num
ber one doubles team won the
doubles match. They beat Ander
son and Summe of Valdosta 10-3
in the finals after defeating the
LaGrange team 10-4 in the semi
final round.
Number two doubles, Burgin and
Jones, lost out in the semi-finals
12-10 to the team from LaGrange.
This team went on to win the
match. Number three doubles
was forfeited because of injury.
Valdosta took this victory.
going so well that Coach West
cleared the bench. Everyone
played in the game. For exam
ple, Coach West had pitchers
playing in the outfield.
SOUTHWESTERN
On Tuesday, May 14, the Braves
traveled to Americus to play
Georgia Southwestern for the last
regular season game of the year.
The Braves took their 18th win
with an 8-4 victory over South
western.
Billy Merritt started the game
and pitched five full innings. He
allowed no runs and was credit
ed with the win. Coach West de
cided to pull Merritt in the sixth
and to let Lewis pitch.
Lewis faced four batters with
out getting an out. Royal came in
the fifth inning with no outs and
the bases loaded. In the three and
two-thirds innings he pitched,
Royal gave up three runs, two of
which were unearned. Collins
came in and got the last out of the
game.
The pitching efforts were backed
up by hitting. Ron Sellars, sec
ond baseman, collected four hits.
Bill “Baseball” Brown had three
hits upping his average to the
team leading .397. Posey, Bowen,
and Best each had two hits in the
victory. Oh, by the way Gramps
Royal now has an average, he
got his first hit in this the last
regular season game.
