Area Operation Crime Alert
More than 10,000 Operation
Crime Alert cards have been
distributed to area residents by
members of the Circle K Club
of West Georgia College, it was
announced today by John M.
Brown, President of the Club.
The Operation Crime Alert
program is an undertaking of
the Circle KClub in cooperation
with the Carrollton Police De
partment. The wallet-size
cards, which are distributed as
part of the program, contain all

Drug Sales Begins
College officials announced Wednesday night that an intensive in
vestigation is under way in the Carrollton area concerning the possi
ble sale and use of dangerous drugs, .
MARIJUANA
Indications are, according to
college officials, that some stu
dents are involved. There has
been no report as to how many
or to what extent. It is known that
a number of students have been
questioned, and it is expected that
the investigation will continue
for several days.
A representative of a federal
law enforcement agency was to
join the investigation Thursday.
At this point there is no indica
tion as to what action will be tak
en concerning individuals in
volved in the matter.

Brown told of his hopes con
cerning the program. He said,
“Many crimes go unreported
each year, either because peo
ple just don’t want to get in
volved or because they panic,
and don’t know what to do when
It was reported that a quantity
of marijuana was confiscated
during the investigation. How
much was found and where it was
found were not revealed, although
officials pointed out that it was
not found on the campus.
Dr. James E. Boyd, president,
issued the following statement:
‘“We feel that all students ought
to be aware of the risks they run
- the risks to their health and al
so the fact that they are subject
to prosecution and severe pen
alties under existing laws- if they
experiment with dangerous
drugs.”

and lead to more arrests and
convictions. We hope to put the
eyes of every person in town on
the criminal element so they
will realize that it is senseless
to perform a crime and take
the increased risk of being
caught. We again urge every
citizen to report all suspicious
activity in the neighborhood
where he lives, works or vis
its.”
Operation Crime Alert cards
are available at the local po
lice station or from members
of the Circle K Club. Residents
are urged to pick up cards if
they don’t already have them.
Language Tests
Scheduled For
June 12
The Foreign Language Place
ment Tests in French, Latin,
Spanish and German, will be
given on June 12, 1968, at 1:30
p.m. in the old auditorium.
Students having two or more
years of high school foreign
language, except transfer stu
dents, are required to take the
placement exam.
Former Rep. Charles L.
Weltner to he Speaker
A record 243 West Georgia seniors will receive their Bachelor de
grees at commencement exercises on Sunday, June 2, at 2;00 p.m.
Former Fifth District Rep. Charles L. Weltner of Atlanta will speak
at graduation exercises.
For the first time in its history,
West Georgia College will award
Master of Arts degrees, begun
last fall quarter. The two stu
dents are William Miles Cox,
Carrollton and George Marvin
Martin of Carrollton.
Mr. Weltner is a graduate of
Oglethorpe College and Colum
bia University Law School. He
served for two years in the Unit
ed States Army, and represented
the Fifth Congressional District
in the U. S. House of Represen
tatives from 1963 to 1967.
Weltner was active in the suc
cessful fight against the old
county unit system, and he drew
worldwide recognition when he
withdrew his candidacy for re
election because he coulcj not
support the entire Democratic
ticket in Georgia.
Following this withdrawal, he
became vice-chairman of the Na
tional Democratic Party and
traveled extensively around the
country promoting youth work in
the party. He is a practicing law
yer in Atlanta. He is the author of
the book “Southerner,” and holds
the honorary degree of LL.D.
