Sorority Plans Project
For Needy Children
A sorority at West Georgia College is concentrating its efforts on
a project which will make Christmas a little brighter this year for
some of the state’s unfortunate children.
Phi Kappa Zeta, a social soror
ity, is conducting a toy drive
for the benefit of children at the
Central State Hosptial at Mil
ledgeville. Similar to the “Empty
Stocking Fund” campaign con
ducted each year by the Jaycees,
the drive involves collecting toys,
repairing them, wrapping them
individually, and delivering them
to the children’s ward at the hos
pital.
“With so many members of Phi
Kappa Zeta sorority majoring in
elementary education, the in
terest in children is tremendous.
This is why we consider a proj
ect to help the children at the
Central State Hospital,” accord
ing to Linda Gift of Barnesville,
president of the organization.
“After investigating the situa
tion at the hospital, we discov
ered that not all the children are
mentally retarded, but some have
been placed there as orphans. We
are enthusiastic about helping all
of them. Not only do we want to
®hr®tal (korgtan
conduct a drive for toys, but we
also wish to present the children
with an entertaining program,”
she continued.
The drive is being conducted on
a door-to-door basis at various
residences in Carrollton and a
collection center for the toys is
being maintained at the square in
the middle of town.
Distribution of the gifts, and a
Christmas party, complete with
Santa Claus, stockings filled with
candy and cookies, and simple
games, have been planned for De
cember 7.
Phi Kappa Zeta was founded to
promote scholarship, social
functions, and community and
school services. It is one of five
sororities recently established
for West Georgia students, and
is governed by an Inter-frater
nal and a Panhellenic Council.

post; and Jimmy Tingle, wing. Coach Bennett expects Columbus College to be
a fine opponent for the Braves’ opening game. Columbus is coming off a loss
to Alabama College and will be ready to spoil the Braves’ opener.
The pre-game show will begin
at 7:30 p.m. with the tip-off at
8:01 p.m.
STARTERS
Coach Bennett has chosen Jerry
Girdier to open at the point.
Girdier was discharged from the
Marine Corps in January. He was
an allstate Junior College player
at Lake City, Fla., and played his
high school ball at Somerset, Ky.
Jerry is a 6 foot junior from
Danville, Ky.
Opening at one wing for the
Braves will be Jimmy Tingle.
Tingle is a 6’3” senior from East
Point, Ga. Jimmy is a returning
letterman who was the second
highest scorer last year with a
45.7 shooting percentage from the
field. He graduated from Head
land High School and played ball
at Middle Georgia College.
At the other wing will be Fred
Jones. Jones is another returning
letterman who will captain the
team this year. Jones was all
conference last year and was the
ninth highest scorer in the con
ference. Fred is from Tucker,
Ga. and transferred here from
Middle Georgia College.
POST POSITIONS
At one post Coach Bennett will
use Dan Parrish. Dan is from
Temple, Ga. and is a three year

ence. Dan is 6’3” tall and is a
senior.
Frank Smerkar will hold down
the other post position. Smerkar
is a 6’B” junior from James
town, N. Y. Big Frank (260 lbs.)
transferred here from Brewton
Parker College where he was a
starter for two years. His size
should make him the rebound
leader of the team.
STRONG TEAM
The West Georgia Braves are
strong physically as well as in
depth this season. For any mem
ber of the team, Coach Bennett
has an able substitute.
Tonight’s game should be an ex
citing opener. According to Ben
nett, “Columbus College should
be a formidable opponent who
could give us some trouble.”
