Gwen Murphy
Given Awards
BY BRUCE JONES
The well known success of
the West Georgia girls’ volleyball
team is due largely to a senior
business education major by the
name of Gwen Murphy. Miss
Murphy is from Thomaston, Ga.,
where she lettered in basketball
four years.
ALL-STAR TEAM
Miss Murphy, captain of the
1968 team, never played a game
of volleyball in her life until she
was introduced to the sport by
Coach Dorothy McNabb in the
fall of her freshman year in
1965. Since then she has been
named to West Georgia’s All-Star
team three years in a row and
will undoubtedly be named to it
again this year.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR
In 1966, Gwen received the
highest and most coveted award
given to a female collegiate
volleyball player. S he was named
the Woman Volleyball Player of
the Year in Georgia.
“Gwen is tremendously
versatile, receiving All-State
basketball honors in high school,
and is certainly deserving of any
recognition she receives,” said
Coach McNabb.
Duke Represents
Braves in CC Meet
Kenny Duke, the number one
man on the Braves’ conference
championship cross-country
team, represented West Georgia
in the N.A.I.A. National
championships held on Nov. 23
in Oklahoma City. Duke, who
placed 144 out of the 300
runners, ran very well said Coach
Wilson and probably would have
done even better had he not run
so fast at the beginning of the
race. Duke passed the two-mile
mark in 9 minutes 27 seconds
which is 40 seconds faster than
he has ever run the two-mile.
WINNING TEAM
The winning team in the meet
was Fort Hayes State University
of Kansas. Fort Hayes also had
the individual winner, John
Mason, with a time of 23
minutes 40 seconds for the
five-mile course. Second place
was captured by the Western
Michigan University runners and
third by Kansas State University
at Emporia.
The Braves hold great
promise for next year with many
returnees and new runners
joining the team, said the Braves
coach.

Basketball Miseries
Plague Braves Squad
BY STEVE ELLERBEE
The West Georgia Braves of Coach Jan Bennett were supporting a
respectable record of two wins and the same amount of losses before
the holidays came. During these holidays the Braves performed far
below pre-season expectations.
Their first three road games
were not only away from home
but also out of state. The first
was a contest in Alabama with
Huntington College. This was
the first loss of the disastrous
road trip. The Huntington
round-bailers won the contest by
a mere basket, 82-80.
SECOND GAME
The second game was also in
Alabama, but this game was the
only victory of the trip.
Alabama College was again the
victim of the WGC attack. The
game ended opposite to the
previous night’s action at
Huntington. The Braves won by
only two, 59-57.
The next action came as the
Braves came to Tennessee for a
battle with Tennessee Tech. This
game became the second loss on
the road in just three outings.
The powerful Tennessee team
demolished the Braves by a score
of 65-53.
BACK TO GEORGIA
Moving back into Georgia,
the Braves took on Piedmont
College on Jan. 4. This game

Behind today’s shiny new wedding
bands lies a wealth of tradition. The
practice of wearing matching wed
ding bands dates back to a thousand
or more years B. C. when it was cus
tomary to exchange betrothal bands
to seal a marriage pledge. The double
ring ceremony itself is English in
origin and has been popular since
Victorian times. Interesting, too, is
the fact that the engagement ring
and the wedding band are worn on
the fourth finger of the left hand
because it was once believed that the
vein of love ran from this finger di
rectly to the heart. Art Carved rings
of course, don’t date back to 1000
B. C., but they have been beloved by
brides and grooms since 1850.

went down in the books as the
third defeat in four games. This
contest ended with Piedmont
compiling 64 points to the
Braves’ 51.
This ended the holiday road
trip with the Braves compiling a
disappointing 1-3 record. With
this record on the line, the
Braves traveled to Atlanta to
face the Oglethorpe Petrels for
the second time in the season. In
the midst of flaring tempers, the
Petrels gunned down the Braves
78-49.
RECORD
With the previous loss to
Georgia State on the road, this
ran their record to 1-6 for
out-of-town games. For the
season this ran the record to a
very disappointing 3-6 which is
far below the pre-season
expectations.
The WGC Braves will be
trying to boost their record with
a return to their own home
court. Georgia Southwestern
comes to West Georgia on
Friday, Jan. 10, for a conference
game.

Problems
It is that time of the year again. Time for be to begin the old
gripe column once more, and it seems that the best thing to gripe
about now is the basketball team.
BASKETBALL TEAM
I guess that by now everyone should know that our Braves looked
pathetic on their road trip, and they have the record to prove it. The
record for the trip was a disappointing 1-5. This is far below
expectations since the team has so much talent as was shown last
season.
Something has to be blamed for these poor showings. I’m not
sure it can be blamed on the coaching job either. Coach Bennett
proved his ability to coach a winning team last season. If you can’t
blame it entirely on a coaching job, who can help to bear the blame
for the poor games.
SENIORS
It could be the seniors on this year’s squad. A team cannot play a
good brand of basketball without leadership. West Georgia’s seniors
may not be giving the type of leadership that is required to have a
winning team.
These seniors are Fred Jones, this year’s captain, Jimmy Tingle,
and Dan Parrish. Each of these players established his own individual
record last season. Jones had the team’s leading average, Tingle was
the leading scorer, and Parrish shot for the best percentage.
STATISTICS
To substantiate these harsh statements there are some statistics
that can be related. Last year these three seniors had scored a total
of 385 points and the team had a 5-4 record. Now these same three
seniors have scored a total of only 270 points which is 115 points
less than last year. That is an average of 13 points less for each game
than last year. Think of where we would be with those 13 points
each game!
I’m not saying that it is entirely their fault since I have not
witnessed any of the last six games, but a little more effort from
these players could improve the team. As you can see, the Braves
need your support. Come out tonight and yell. Maybe that’s what
the team needs. Who knows?
