Hirsch and Pershing Honored
Mr. Ted Hirsch, chief business officer of West Georgia, and Dr.
Jack Pershing, Dean of Student Affairs, were both honored by local
Civic groups last week.
Hirsch, Friday night was named Carrollton’s “Man of the Year”
for 1968. Dr. I. S. Ingram, W. G. President Emeritus, made the an
nouncement and presented the citation at the annual membership
meeting of the Carrollton Chamber of Commerce.
“For thirty five years this community has been wonderful to me
but never more wonderful than in the last two minutes. I am deeply
grateful,” Hirsch said following the announcement.
Dean Pershing was elected president of the Rotary Club for a one
year term which begins in July. The club election of officers was
held on Tuesday.
N. Car. Prof. Will Lecture
Dr. C. Richie Bell, professor of biology at the University of North
Carolina, will be on the West Georgia College campus as a visiting
lecturer on January 22.
Dr. Bell’s visit to this area is under the auspices of the American
Institute of Biological Sciences.
That afternoon, at 3:00 in the Biology Lecture Hall, he will talk to
students and faculty about polyploidy and plant evolution. This will be
followed in the evening by a lecture on “Evolution and the Social En
vironment” at 8:00 in the Mathematics-Physics Lecture Hall. Both
lectures are open to the public.
Dr. Bell, a native ofCincinatti, has taught at the University of Illi
nois, and is now director of the North Carolina Botanical Gardens of
Chapel Hill.
He is the co-author of Wild Flowers of North Carolina and Manual
of the Vascular Flora of the Carolinas.
WG Adds Five to Faculty
Five new members have been added to the West Georgia faculty for
the Winter Quarter. Two of the five are W. G. graduates.
The new faculty members are listed below.
Edwin John Dye, Instructor in mathmatics. B. A., West Georgia
College. He is working on his doctorate at the University of Georgia.
Phyllis Lewis Fountain, Part-time instructor in Education. B. S.,
West Georgia College; M. Ed., West Georgia College.
Richard Dickson Guynn, Assistant Professor in Economics. B. S.,
Virginia Polytechnic Institute, M. A., Memphis State University.
Guynn is completing his doctorate at the University of Alabama.
Mrs. Diane Phillips Jennings, Instructor in Political Science. B. A.
Westminister College. She is completing her doctorate atTulane Uni
versity.
Harold L. Kidd, Lecturer in Accounting, 8.8.A., Georgia State
College and Certified Public Accountant, State of Georgia.

WG Students
Available
For the second consecutive
year, “Accolade,” the Junior
Women’s Honor Society, is offer
ing a tutoring service for West
Georgia College students. This
service provides private in
struction for any student who is
having difficulty with his studies.
This service is designed to
guide the student seeking assist
ance toward successful comple
tion of his academic work. In the
past, students who received tu
toring early in the quarter
achieved the best results. The
tutoring services are available
to any student who requests as
sistance.
Miss Gay Davis, president of
“Accolade,” urges that any stu
dent who wished to serve as a tu
tor, contact the service and reg
ister his subjects. The tutor and
the student may arrange the hour
and the location for tutoring.
The undergraduate tutor re
ceives SI.OO for each hour of his
services. The student requesting
a graduate student as a tutor will
pay $2.00 per hour of instruction.
To obtain tutoring services, a
student may register with Miss
Mary Jane Baker in Room 103,
Administration Building between
8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. or call
832-7065, Ext. 394.

dents are involved in city tutor
ing programs. Mrs. Ashley Wil
liams, SCAN Coordinator, re
ports that two programs are pre
sently underway. One program
involves the Maple Street Ele
mentary School tutoring Pro
gram, and the second is a city
wide volunteer program oper
ating under the direction of Rev.
Jim Holderness.

KEN CARLTON signs up for a room in Row West - West
Georgia’s first coed dorm. Male students will move into the west
wing as soon as the new V-l 1 women’s dorm is occupied. Women
now living in Row West will be relocated in Row East and in other
women’s dorms. Although Row will be “coed,” in effect it will be
two separate residence halls with a common lobby and study room.
