West Georgia Dolphins
Open Season With Loss
The West Georgia swim team, the Dolphins, kicked off their 1969
season last Thursday night as Emory University narrowly defeated
them by a score of 42-40.
West Georgia swimmers took
first place in three events. Phil
McGhee captured the top spot in
the 1000-yard freestyle with a
time of 14 minutes. 8.7 seconds.
McGhee also took first in the
500-yard freestyle, with a time
of six minutes, 34.4 seconds.
BACKSTROKE VICTORY
The Dolphins also captured first
place in the 200-yard backstroke.
West Georgia’s Tom Rees won
first place over his brother Win
ship, who swims for Emory.
Their two times were two min
utes, 31.1 seconds, and two min
utes. 35.3 seconds respectively.
West Georgia took second in a
number of events. David Hum
phries took second in the 50-yard
freestyle (28.1 seconds) followed
by West Georgia’s MikeMitchum
in third (28.5 seconds). Tom Rees
Women Basketballers Lose
To Berry In Season Opener
The West Georgia Braves wo
men’s basketball team faced the
Berry College team on Monday
night. The score of the game was
an embarrassing 68-22 loss for
WGC.
Miss Brown, the coach of the
girls, said that the score was as
bad as it was because it was her
girls first game of the season.
She stated that she knew they
would improve with experience.
ROSTER
Of the thirteen girls on the ros
ter only four are returning from
last year’s squad. This year’s
team includes: Debbie Pender,
Beth Williams. Blanche Thom
as, Vickie Walker, Shiela Eid
son, Susan Robinson, and Tindal
Rainey at forwards with Linda
Graham, Mary Popham, Mary
Wright, Windy Rosenbalm, Mary
Burgin, and Melinda Overton at
guards.
Club Soccer
Starts In Fall
It has been announced by the Ath
letic Department that West Geor
gia will organize a soccer team
on a club basis and will kickoff
with a six match schedule next
Fall. The “club” connotation
means that the team will be es
tablished on a trial basis with a
limited budget for the first year
and participation and spectator
interest of the student body will
determine whether or not it will
achieve varsity status.
THE COACH
Coach Ed Lambert who played
first string center forward on
Springfield College’s (Mass.)
National Championship Team in
1947-48 has been assigned coach
ing responsibilities. An initial
organizational meeting for all
candidates will be held in Coach
Lambert’s office at the Health and
Physical Education Building on
Monday, .January 20at 4:00p.m.
Those candidates who have class
conflicts with meeting should
check in with Coach Lambert.

West Georgia took second and
third places in three-meter div
ing. Rick Wagner came in sec
ond with 141.1 points, followed
by Phil Lezontier in third with
131.75 points.
Bill Keappler took third for
W est Georgia in the 100-and 200-
yard freestyles, with times of one
minute, 6.8 seconds, and two min
utes, 36.6 seconds, respectively.
A near-capacity crowd was on
hand for the meet held at West
Georgia. The Dolphins swim Fri
day night, January 17, against
Birmingham Southern. The meet
gets underway at 7:30, at West
Georgia’s Health and Physical
Education Building.
The next game for the women’s
team will be against Fort Valley.
The game will be played in Fort
Valley on January 17.
Braves Statistics Reveal
Winning Caliber of Tearn

This year’s Braves basketball team is supporting the seventh best
defensive average in the nation and the 19th best shooting percentage.
They are holding their opponents to an average of 63.4 points a game
and are shooting for a percentage of approximately 50 percent.
The following are personal statistics of the individual team
members.

COACH ED LAMBERT’S West Georgia Dolphins have added new members to boost last year’s squad
of about six members to a squad of over ten. The team includes: Ben Tollman, Tom Reese, Mike
Mitchum, Logan Howe, Phil McGhee, David Humphries, Tim McCalister, Ben Brewer, Phil Lezontier,
Bill Keappler, and Rick Wagner.
Braves Beat Southwestern; Lose
To Berry in Round-Ball Battles
After a long and disastrous road
trip over the holidays, the West
Georgia Braves returned home
to face the basketball team of
Georgia Southwestern College
last Friday night. The Braves
took their fourth victory from
Southwestern. This brought their
record to a still disappointing 4
wins and 6 losses with one and one
loss in conference action.
The game began slow with action
to match. With a little over half
of the first half gone, Southwest
ern tied the game at 18-18. The
Braves finally took a two-point
lead into the dressing room, with
the score at halftime being JO
ES.
SECOND HALF
The second half action seemed
to pick up slightly. With 10:00
left in the game, the Braves had
built their lead to six, 43-37. A
better display of ball handling and
control in the late minutes of the
second half helped to edge out a
58-51 victory.
LEADING SCORERS
Leading the scoring in the
Braves’ fourth victory was Jimmy
Tingle with 17 points. Tingle was
closely followed by Frank Smre
kar with 15 and Gary Vaught with
13 points. Rounding out the scor
ing for the Braves was Dan Par
rish with 6, Fred Jones with 4 and
Dan O’Connor with 3 points.

The scoring leaders for South
western were Wayne Adams and
F. Gary Mackey both with 17
points. They were followed by
Ron Riley and Ralph Nunn each
with 6 points.
BERRY
West Georgia hit the road again
on Tuesday night to play Berry
College in Rome. The team from
Berry issued the Braves their 7th
loss of the season, 58-51.
The Braves were in the ball
game up until the final minutes
when a turnover lost us the ball.
The turnover occurred when the
game was as close as two points
and resulted in a 3-point play
which kept us from winning.
LEADING SCORERS
The leading scorers for the
Braves were Gary Vaught with 15
points, Jimmy Tingle with 13, and
Fred Jones with 11. Berry’s lead
ers were Price with 20, Gris
well with 15, and Hood with 11.
This gave the Braves their sec
ond loss in GLAC competition.
Their record is now 1-2 in the
GIAC. The Braves next action
will be on the road against Arm
strong College in Savannah, on
Saturday, January 18. The next
home game is the homecoming
game against Georgia State on
Saturday, January 25.
