REGENTS TAP VICE-PRESIDENT WALKER
FOR ACTING PRESIDENT OF COLLEGE

VICE PRESIDENT GEORGE W. WALKER
V'ice president George W. Walker, who earlier last week removed his name from
the list of those being considered for the presidency of West Georgia, has been
appointed acting president of the college by the Board of Regents. Dr. Walker will
occupy the position until a successor to President James t. Boyd is selected.
The appointment, which was announced Wednesday by Chancellor George E.
Simpson, will become effective on April l. Dr. Boyd, who has served as president
since 1961, is to assume the newly-created position of vice chancellor for academic
development of the University System of Georgia,
When asked to comment on his election by the board. Dr. Walker said, “1 am
honored by the confidence the chancellor and the Board of Regents have
demonstrated in electing me acting president. Having been associated with the college
since its first senior and having great pride in its development, lam pleased to serve *
in any capacity which will benefit the institution.
“With President Boyd’s leaving, which / regret very much, and before the new
president is selected," he continued, "we have a number of crucial matters to
complete. These include budgeting and preparations for the new fiscal year beginning
in Julv. ”
CHANCELLOR
Dr. Walker added, “I am looking forward to the next few months, and / solicit the
support of the entire college community as we combine our efforts to continue the
development of our institution.
According to Chancellor Simpson, Dr. Walker has been one of the chief architects
of the development of West Georgia “into one of the outstanding senior colleges of
the University System of Georgia.
“I am confident he will furnish the same type of superb leadership as acting
president, ’’ he said.
“Dr. Walker has been an able and dedicated administrator at West Georgia since
1957 " stated Dr. Boyd. “With the full support of the faculty, students,
administrators, and citizens of the community, he will provide the leadership

necessary in continuing to move the institution forward as an outstanding senior
college. ”
Dr. Walker had served as dean of the college from 1960 until he was appointed
vice president in March, 1969.
EDUCA TION
A native of Canada, and educated in the public schools of Detroit, Mich., Dr.
Walker received an A. B. degree in English from Alma College in Michigan, and an M.
A. degree in English from Wayne State University in Detroit. In 1951 he received a
Doctor of Philosophy degree in English from the University of North Carolina.
The acting president has served on the faculties of Wayne State University and the
University of North Carolina, as chairman of the division of language, literature, and
arts at Lander College in South Carolina, and as visiting professor of American
literature at Appalachian State Teachers College in North Carolina.
In 1957, Dr. Walker came to West Georgia as chairman of the division of
humanities, and on July I, 1960, he became dean of the college.
During World War 11, he served as an officer with the U. S. Air Force, winning a
number of citations, including the Distinguished Flying Cross and Oak Leaf. He holds
the reserve rank of major and since 1961 has served as Liaison Officer for the U. S.
Air Force Academy.
ORGANIZA TIONS
Dr. Walker is a member of the Rotary Club, Sunset Hills Country Club, the
Modern Language Association of America, the College English Association, the
Georgia Association of Educators, and other organizations.
He has served as section secretary and section chairman of the South Atlantic
Modern Language Association, with the Georgia Council on Teacher Education , and
in leadership capacities with a number of major university system committees. He has
also written articles and papers for professional journals and meetings.
Dr. Walker is a member of the Carrollton Presbyterian Church, and is married to
the former Patricia Bost wick of Ilahira.
