Student Actor Chosen ' lndian '
In Lost Colony Outdoor Drama
Believe it or not, it may take a
deep tan to be an actor.
Joey Camp, a junior from
Mableton, is trying to get as
much sun as possible. He is
dieting, running, doing exercises,
and growing his hair long - all to
prepare himself to “be an
Indian” for the summer in the
production of “The Lost Colony”
in North Carolina.
Dr. Oliver Link, head of the
drama department, has had the
leading role in “The Lost Colony”
in the past. He recently posted a
bulletin announcing try-outs at
the South-Eastern Theater
Conference. Joey was interested

Mercer Choir Presents
'Crisp Performance'
By TRISHA COKER
The 25-voice Mercer University
Concert Choir gave a crisp
performance to an attentive
audience in the recital hall
Wednesday night.
Under the direction of John
Van Cura and accompanied on
piano by James Carmichael, the
choir sang selections by Schubert
in the first mass, and followed in
the second mass with
arrangements by Hayden.
Outstanding soloist were
Angela Cofu, Elizabeth Williams,
and went to Columbus to try-out.
Around 500 people were there to
audition for places in 20 different
shows, including “The Lost
Colony.”
Joey met Robert Knowles,
head of “The Lost Colony,” and
was given a private audition,
following the first audition. Two
weeks later the student received
a contract signing him into the
company as an actor-technician.
This will enable him to be a “man
behind the scenes,” a member of
the chorus, and an Indian dancer.
The company will furnish Joey a
place to stay and will pay him $35
and Robert Howley. Each
selection was preceded by a
short introduction on the piano by
Mr. Carmichael.
This was the beginning of what
Max Peterson, who introduced
the choir, hopes will be a “con
tinuing exchange” between
Mercer University and West
Georgia. Mr. Peterson is an in
structor in music at West
Georgia.
A reception in the Humanities
lobby followed the performance.

weekly.
MUSIC
While at West Georgia, Joey
has had roles in “Skin of Our
Teeth,” “We Bombed in New
Haven,” and “The Zoo Story.”
The student says he has been
interested in acting since high
school where he participated in
“Oklahoma” and “Showboat” at
South Cobb High School. Joey is
especially interested in musical
comedy and had parts two
seasons in Atlanta’s “Theater of
the Stars.”
Throughout his high school
career, Joey considered himself
to be a music major. He was the
assistant student conductor in the
chorus, the student conductor in
the band, and the assistant drum
major. He has sung in church
choirs, served as a minister of
music where he organized junior
and youth choirs, and sung in
several choruses. He says that he
has sung everything from pop to
classical music.
At South Cobb the WGC junior
was in a 20 voice group, the
“Cantaliers” which sang three
times for the state legislature,
appeared on “Today in Georgia”
and made out-of-state tours.
While in high school he was in the
Atlanta Choral Guild and the
Atlanta Youth Symphony and in
the All State Chorus for two
years.
Joey hopes to study at the New
York Academy of Theatrical Arts
or at the North Carolina School of
the Arts in Winston-Salem.
