Now who do you think a modern day politician would favor in a transaction between two men of equal stature, except for one distinction —one was a millionaire and the other owned very little in the way of material possessions? In sports only, is there true democracy. In sports, the criteria is based on ability to do the job, period. Do you think the capitalists, the politicians, or the labor unions care about what rank of life an in dividual comes from? You can be damn sure they do. It seems that only in sports that one can get the true records of a recorded deed. And the criteria involves only built-in possessions, not material ones. Sure, politicians agree this is the way, but somewhere along the road they seem to take a left turn instead of the right one and decisions are swayed in favor of those with money instead of ability. Why shouldn’t the ablest and the gamest lead the way. What is revolutionary about this? It is simply a true race, a true battle when the swiftest and the ablest win. You can’t ’buy’ a goal when the score is tied, so why should one be able to ‘buy’ his way to the top in any other decision? No doubt it is easier to drift along with the current of currency. So let’s hope the democracy of sports will not someday be bought and sold. Let’s hope the tide will keep the shore clean of weakfish who can be swayed. In sports only, can we still see how good an individual can perform. We can view for ourselves who is the better, the millionaire’s fortune or the other man’s ability. There are no class distinctions in sport you are measured by what you can do nothing else counts. Perhaps someday the spirit of sports will endow upon the theory of democracy, a lesson on able-equity. Perhaps, it’s not too late. Hamilton Ranked Number Two Rebounder in NAIA According to the first season report of individual and team statistics from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics in Kansas City, Missouri, West Georgia College’s Charlie Hamilton is ranked as the number two rebounder in the nation. The Braves All-American candidate has a phenomenal 21.1 rebounding average, ranking only behind St. Francis College’s Tony Williams with a 24.6 clip. West Georgia’s 6’5” center is also ranked among the country’s scoring leaders with a 23.1 average. These statistics do not include the past two games in which Hamilton has scored 19 and 23 respectively and pulled down 26 and 29 rebounds for the two contests. West Georgia Topples Augusta; Lift Record to Sparkling 1 1-2 The West Georgia Braves continued their torrent rampage of winning by knocking off small college power Augusta College by the whopping score of 93-58 this past Wednesday evening in Augusta. Powerful Charlie Hamilton certainly enhanced his chances for All-American status by leading the Braves with 23 points and 29 rebounds. Hie 29 caroms which he captured tied his own WGC record he set last season. Hie Braves led at the half by the unusually low score of 40-22 and never let up. Before the game, an Atlanta newspaper had ranked Augusta as the fourth best small college team in the state. West Georgia was ranked fifth, until now. The basketball Braves are off to the best start in the history of the college with their 11-2 season mark and are fast approaching their season high for wins. The record for number of wins is 15 set in 1964. The Braves’ next contest will be tomorrow night at home against Georgia Southwestern in their second conference outing of the season. Game time is 8:00 p.m.
