Benign Bagel Cos.: A Review
BY LIL HARPER
Summer quarter has not been
completely devoid of worthwhile
entertainment. Monday night R
-16 sponsored a concert by the
Benign Bagel Company, an up
and coming new music group.
The band was very well
received and comments like "I
really need to go upstairs and
study but I hate to leave before
it’s over ” abounded.
The Benign Bagel Cos. played
their first gig at an outdoor
concert a few weeks ago where
they gave a fair performance.
Monday’s concert, however, was
noticeably better. The group has

Several thousand people turned out in the
midday sun to participate in Carrollton’s
’’Afternoon In The Park” at Lakeshore Park.
There was music galore, politicians shaking
hands, rides for the kids, homemade ice cream,
cakes, and preserves, and several sideshow
booths. The fun was designed to raise funds for
the American Cancer Society and they netted

practice plus a great deal of
enthusiasm because of the warm
reception. The most negative
comment I heard, and believe

they’re pretty good.”
The members of the Benign
Bagel Cos. are all students at
WGC. There is a senior music
major who plays sax, flute,
acoustical guitar, and who also
does some backup singing. The
rest of the group consists of three
psych majors who play piano,
base, and drums. The lead singer
is Ms. Pepper Ward.
Asa whole the group produces
a strange brand of jazz. They

‘‘Benign Bagel?” you ask.
Admittedly, it’s an ususual name.
Members of the band were
discussing ways to make a van
look inconspicous when someone
came up with the idea that if the
van had the name of a company
painted on the side, no wone
would look twice at it. To which a
nother replied. "Yeah, the name
of a company-like the Benign
Bagel Company.” And it stuck.
Asa non-professional critic, it
is my opinion that the Benign
Bagel Cos. will stick around and I
believe that this refreshing new
group will go far.
