Honors, Awards
Await Students
There are a number of honors and awards awaiting the ambitious
student, sponsored by various West Georgia College organizations.
There are, specifically, five honor organizations and seven awards
which are conferred each year upon deserving students who have met
the requirements set by the various honor societies or award com
mittees
The honor organizations are
open, by invitation only, to
students who have attained the
standards set by individual
organizations. These societies
include Alpha Lambda Delta, the
Freshmen Women’s Honor
Society. Phi Sigma Mu, the
Sophomore Men’s Honor Society,
Accolade, the Junior Woman’s
Service Organization, Phi Alpha
Theta, the History Honor Society,
and Pi Gamma Mu, the Social
Science Society.
HONOR SOCIETIES
Alpha Lambda Delta, the
national freshman women’s
honor society, is open to women
students who have obtained a 3.5
or better average in the freshman
year. The purpose of the society
is “to promote college loyalty, to
advance service, to encourage
leadership on campus, and to
maintain a high standard of
scholarship among college
women.”
Phi Sigma Mu is the honor
society for men who have shown
high scholastic achievement
during their freshman year. The
organization strives “to en
courage and stimulate
scholarship and achievement
among the men of West Georgia
College.”
Accolade, the service
organization for junior women,
lists its qualifications for

membership as service,
scholarship, and leadership.
Phi Alpha Theta, the In
ternational History Honor
Society, is open to students and
professors who are elected to
membership on the basis of
excellence in the study of history.
The objective of Phi Alpha Theta
is the promotion of the study of
history by the encouragement of
research and the exchange of
learning and thought among
historians. It seeks to bring
students, teachers, and writers of
history together intellectually
and socially.
Pi Gamma Mu is the national
honorary fraternity for students
of the social sciences. West
Georgia College’s Georgia Zeta
Chapter requires that men and
women selected for membership
be juniors or seniors, have an
overall B average, and have a
B+ average in social science
courses. The purposes of Pi
Gamma Mu are to promote in
terest in the social sciences and
to recognize excellence of
students pursuing these studies.
West Georgia also confers
seven awards annually upon
deserving students who have met
certain requirements set by the
various nominating committees.
HONORS AWARDS
The Herndon Award was
established as a memorial to

You’ll begin to long for a cup after you’ve been in a few early
morning classes when you can barely keep your eyes open and the
professor’s lecture can not be heard because there is too much lapping
and slurping going on.
Thomas A. Herndon, Jr., a
graduate of the class of 1939, by
friends and classmates. Each
year during the spring Parents
Day convocation, sheepskin
certificates are awarded to fresh
men and sophomores who have
“exhibited outstanding qualities
of character, scholarship, civic
leadership, interest and par
ticipation in the fields of social
and political services’’ as
exemplified by the late Tom
Herndon. The selections for this
award are made by a joint
committee of faculty and
students.
The Watson Award was
established as a memorial to
Gordon Watson, late professor of
English, and is awarded each
spring at the Parents Day Con
vocation to outstanding juniors
and seniors who, in the
estimation of the faculty, have
attained “distinction in their
work, and who have exhibited
those qualities of character,
intelligent leadership, con
scientious devotion to duty,
unfailing courtesy, and
adherence to truth and beauty
which this esteemed teacher
exemplified.”
The names of a limited number
of West Georgia College juniors
and seniors are included each
year in “Who’s Who in American
Universities and Colleges.’’
Students chosen for this honor
are selected by a faculty and
student committee on the basis of

scholastic standings, par
ticipation in campus and com
munity activities and leadership
ability and potential. These
students are also honored at the
spring Parents Day Convocation.
A joint committee of the
Student Government Association
and the faculty of the Art
Department annually selects for
purchase, one or more examples
of student art work. These prize
awards are exhibited for one year
in the Student Center and are
then placed permanently in
appropriate places on the
campus.
GRADUATION AWARDS
Three awards are available to
outstanding graduating seniors
each year. Alpha Lambda Delta
annually awards the Maria
Leonard Book Award to the
graduating senior member of
Alpha Lambda Delta who has
earned the highest cumulative
grade point average. Second,
West Georgia Chapter of the
American Association of
University Professors presents
an annual award to the senior
who has achieved the highest
overall scholastic average of the
graduating class. Finally, the
Wilda Seagraves Jackson Award
is presented annually by the
Alumni Association to a
graduating senior in the field of
education for recognition of
scholastic achievement and the
possession of those qualities
which produce an excellent
classroom teacher. The award
was established in memory of
Mrs. Jackson, a West Georgia
alumna, by her family and
friends.
DEAN’S LIST
A final honor for students who
achieve a grade point ratio of 3.5
while carring a minimum of 15
quarter hours is the Dean’s List,
which is released at the end of
each quarter. Dean’s List
students have the added ad
vantage of being allowed to take
a 20-hour course load withejt
special permission.
