Spiritual Experience

this list; and in place of the
phrase ‘spiritual experience,’ you
could just as well substitute the
phrase, ‘campus concert.’ ”
After the initial. “You’re
crazy! ” sort of looks which I had
expected, one after another saw
what I meant. Somebody put it
this way. “the campus concerts
are the students’ major corporate
spiritual experience on cam
pus!” And, again, 1 agree. Sure ,
there are athletic events, dates,
and other such things which help
out; but the concert is in a class
by itself. For a sub-culture which
has rejected tat least temporari
ly and usually for pretty good
cause, in my opinion) organized,
traditional approaches to
religious experience as being
superficial, sterile, and self
centered, the campus concerts
offer a bridge until they can see
through the trappings of “status
quo theological jargon’’ to the
realities (and Keality) behind it.
With this understanding
assumed. I think the present
situation with respect to the
campus concert issue is deserv
ing of more than the typical
bureaucratic nonchalance or the
placating of routine per
missiveness It seems to me that
an effort ought to be begun, now,
from as high in the
Administration as necessary to
reinstate friendly relations with
the several elements of our near
and extended community.
In that regard, it seems good to
end this comment with a remark
made, appropriately enough, by
one of the student in the class.
After we had compared concerts
with more orthodox spiritual
experiences according to the
several criteria mentioned
above, he said, “There’s one
thing you forgot. In most
religions 1 know of, there is an
element of sacrifice. Sometimes
it involves fasting, sometimes
self-inflicted pain, sometimes
gettting up on Sunday morning
and sitting on uncomfortable
benches hoping something
significant will happen during the
worship service although it
usually doesn’t." His point was
that perhaps the concert as
spiritual experience has been
lacking somewhat in this regard.
Perhaps it will take a sense of
sacrifice, and this is an issue for
students rather than ad
ministration, not only to reinstate
the concert series but the enable
the series to be more than an
excuse for self-indulgence.

Well kids, it’s that time. So far
you’ve learned which kind of
camera to buy, how to focus, and
what kind of film to use. Now it’s
time for the most important of
all. < How to get rid of all this stuff
vou just bought?)
So let’s take a picture. If you
bought either an SLR or a range
finder, your camera should have
come equipped with a built-in
light meter This light-meter is a
handy little gadget to have tall
the pros use them!). It tells you
just exactly what exposure
(what?) to use The light meter
should consist of an arrow,
usually to the side of the meter
and another little arrow with a
circle tor hole, depending on how
existential you are).
The idea is to point your
camera at your subject, focus,
and then turn the other little ring
that’s just behind the focus ring
until the arrow with the circle
thole) on the end is lined up with
the other normal arrow If you
can do this, then you have enough

light to take a picture
Now that little ring has a lot of
numbers on it, and those num
bers are called f-stops. (But then
again what’s in a name.) Now if
your two arrows don’t match up
then there is not enough light and
you had better use a flash (a
what?). This is very basically
how to take a picture. Now if all
of this seems confusing, that's
