Hoskins, Owings Tell
Impressions of India
“India is a beautiful country
dotted with filthy cities and
plagued by illiteracy,” according
to Floyd Hoskins, assistant
professor of history, and Dr.
Huey Owings, assistant professor
of English.
After spending approximately
two months in India as part of the
Georgia Consortium on Inter
national Education, the two
professors readily discussed the
problems and promises of one of
the world’s most diverse nations.
The average Indian laborer
makes between 85 and 90 dollars
a year and, as a result, he doesn’t
have money to spend on luxury
items.
Despite this low income, most
of the children in the country
appear to be well fed except in
Bombay and Calcutta where the
“street people," refugees from
recent wars, number close to
200,000. And with an illiteracy
rate of nearly 80 percent, it seems
obvious that India has a long way
to go before approaching western
standards of living.
There are any number of
positive factors which could
attract Americans to India. "For
one thing, the people seem to
genuinely like Americans,” said
Hoskins.

“The Indian people are also
very proud of their nuclear
achievements. Although they
stress the fact that their nuclear
knowledge will be used for
peaceful purposes, such as the
construction of waterways
through the rocky areas,”
Owings explained.
"Intellectuals consider India’s
greatest achievement the
establishment of the world’s
largest democracy which has
survived for 25 years under
adverse circumstances," added
Owings.
Most Indian children who
complete the 11 years of public
education are fluent in at least
three languages, including their
own native dialect, Hindi, the
national language, and English
which is considered to be India’s
international language.
"Although very few American
tourists travel through India, the
country has much to offer in the
way of natural beauty and ar
chitectural marvels. In the past,
travelers feared epidemics such
as cholera or smallpox. But with
modern medicine, anyone
journeying through the country
could feel virtually safe from
disease," Hoskins explained.
