Electrical Costs Increase
Despite Conservation Moves
Although energy eom
sumption here was cut by a
tremendous amount last year,
costs created by electrical use
skyrocketed by some $30,000
over the previous year.
According to a report released
hy President Pafford’s office,
the cost for electrical con
sumption on the campus
tumped $30,768.25.
While the cost created by
electrical usage jumped
astronomically, the college did
cut electrical consumption by
1,846,016 kilowatts over a 10-
month period from November
Race On For House Post 2
Business Success
Helps, Says Carroll
Republican candidate for
House of Representatives
district 66, post two, Frank
Carroll said this week that his
manufacturer proves his ability
to be successfull at the
‘ representative business.’ >->' '
The 64-year-old Villa Rica \ 1 l
man also said he would “love to
uet the tax burden lifted” “I’d ’ k
like to see some of the die- H
latorship taken from the M
commissioners, namely that . % gjj
Blackburn man,” he added.
Carroll cited his reasoning for taking away the
commissioners’ power because “the man can
refuse tax digests, and that s not light.
According to Carroll, he decided to run
because, “nobody is running with the same
philosophy as me, and that is taking away
Commissioner Duncan’s powers, and reforming
ihe education process.”
Carroll, who is a retired hosiery mill owner,
said. “1 came out on top in the business world,
and I know the problems of the people. 1 know
.bout paving bills and such, and being retired. I
can devote full time, if elected, to the service of
ihe people.”
In the primary election, Carroll ran as both a
Democrat and a Republican, and he says he and
like to see the laws changed so voters could
split the tickets in the primary . instead of
waiting till the general election.'
Carroll says he “can see no reason to support
that ERA thing, because I can’t see how it would
help.”

Ford Back To Congress •>
‘Divorce Court’ Begins
BY JIM RALSTON
With all the suspended drama
of -‘Divorce Court”, President
Ford is scheduled to take the
stand before Congress this week
to explain the reasons for his
premature pardon of deposed
President Nixon
Alas, the initial storm
generated by his unexpected
maneuver sent much of the
nation reeling and left for the
rocks the shattered •marriage”
with Congress which Ford so
lovingly spoke of. Too bad, for
in this case it would have been
tar less costly to take a tip from
the times and only offer a
compromise to live together,
thus foregoing all those
troublesome legal con
siderations.
But no, by sticking with the
tried and worn, his solemn vow
to avoid sneakery has now
placed him squarely in the
grasps of a still-smarting
Congress.
Of course, this special
hearing doesn't hold so much at
stake this time, as the pardon,
once issued, is irrevocable, but
many Congressmen are still
curiously concerned about
Ford’s sudden complete
reversal on this touchy
situation. The surface ex
planation of “binding the
wounds of Watergate” only
produced more salt to furthei
damage the infection, and
Congressional charges of a
coverup on a coverup were not
infrequent.
Understandably, Ford s
approach to close your eyes and
torget it ever happened is, no
doubt, an appealing one for
many of Nixon’s most diehard
supporters, but this ostrich
stance proved just too in
credible to those millions who
diligently pursued the sickness
Glanton’s Concerns
‘ Education, Tax'
Tom Glanton, Democratic
candidate for the House of
Representatives, district 66 post
two. said this week that if he is tfo
elected, he will use his first year =.
in office as an orientation N—<f
“As one of 60 freshman
representatives, there will be
more opportunities for fresh
men legislators to be more x
vocal. But. as a layman, without
really enough understanding of M
the legislative process. 1 will do
more listening than anything,”
said Glanton.
A 34 year old personnel manager and real
estate broker, Glanton is making his second try
for a house seat on Nov. 5.
He was defeated two years ago by Elmer
Bohannon, but he won the run-off election in
September. Glanton said he decided to run m
1974, because “I was pleased to get into a run-off.
then in a five man race.”
Glanton says his main concerns are education
and property tax relief two issues which he says
run hand in hand.
“The property tax is a source of main concern
among people in this district, and there are a
number of real good considerations through the
Ways and Means Committee. But the main
concern is that something is done immediately,
because this tax affects a lot of people,” said
Glanton.
Glanton said that in the area of education, he is
interested in teacher salary increases and
funding for primary and secondary schools.

Nixon, dubiously dragged from
atop his imperial pedestal and
exposed in all his squalor, is

No wonder many of Ford s

and disillusioned as a result of
this supreme forgiveness,

Harding, the letdown was too
great, and he sadly took the

passed away.
Nixon’s mark on society still
smolders, however tarnished,
but his administration’s
trademark of honor and its
fervent attacks against social
permissiveness now lies in a
pious rumble. In the light of all
the facts, Nixon’s own
creation, the “silent majority ”,
was unwilling to sustain him,
and in his last chance appeal at
the Grand Ole Opry, Nixon took
on all the trappings of a mere
slickered “good ole boy”.
Without the early persistent
efforts of a dedicated few, the
previous administration would
have stormed on unscathed and
laid the solid foundation for
Spiro TANARUS., who would have been
flagrantly practicing in 1964 the
same abuses that Orwell only
dreamed about.
Although the Ford ad
ministration has chosen to link
itself with the past, perhaps now
a suitable re examination of
priorities and a moderate truce
can be had concerning those
everyday social issues and
concerns made so in
flammatory by the previous
administration. Perhaps Betty
Ford and her seemingly sen
sible children can accomplish
this, for it’s only about time that
apple pie be taken off the
shoulder and put back on the
plate where it belongs.
