Georgia Internship Program
Opens Government Fields

Students here majoring in
any field now have an op
portunity to put “classroom
theories” to work in everyday
life through a special state
sponsored intern program,
according to Henry Defour.
Deadlines for submitting
applications for the Georgia
Internship Program and the
Offender Rehabilitation
Program for winter quarter are
Nov. 8 and Nov. 21, respec
tively.
Applications whould be
submitted to the Public Ser
vices Office in Adamson Hall,
according to Dr. Richard Folk,
coordinator of the Georgia
Internship Program.
Candidates for the Georgia
Internship Program will be
interviewed by representatives
of the program, ad
ministrators,and faculty
members between Nov. 11 and
Nov. 22.
Offender Rehabilitation
applications will be interviewed
on Nov. 22, Students in the
programs will be notified
shortly after the interviews as
to whether or not they have
been accepted and where they
will be serving.
“This experience can be more
valuable than any classroom
experience. Not meaning to
play down the importance of the
classroom, but students will
have the opportunity to apply
classroom theory to practical
situations,” Dr. Folk said.
Usually, seven to nine
students serve as interns
through the Georgia Internship
Program every quarter in fields
ranging from health services to
Debate Teams Compete;
Fall To Redlands , Duke
The debate team climbed to
the semi-finals competing with
68 teams in a tournament at the
University of North Carolina
last weekend.
While the varsity team was
competing at Chapel Hill, the
college’s freshman team ad
vanced to the quarter-final
rounds at the Wake Forest
Novice Tournament.

open to students in every major
field of study to allow them the
opportunity to serve in a
government or public service
agency for one quarter and earn
college credit at the same time.
Credit is arranged through the
student’s major department.
“The one thing that strikes
me is the students’ reactions
after they have returned from
this internship experience.
They are full of enthusiasm
after the experience with real
people and real situations,” Dr.
Folk said.
Sakey of Fort Walton, Florida,
made it to the elimination
rounds with a 6-0 record.
In sudden death eliminations
they defeated the University of
Michigan in octa-finals, and
George Mason University in
quarter-finals. With only four
teams remaining in the tour
nament, West Georgia lost to
the University of Redlands.
West Georgia was the only team
from the South to advance to the
semi-final round, according to
debate coach Chester Gibson.
In individual awards, Knapp
took fourth place in the tour
nament, in competition with 136
participants.
Freshman debaters David
Tatum of Warner Robins, and
Irwin Sperling, of Atlanta,
defeated George Washington
University, the University of
Massachusetts, Vanderbilt,
Duke and East Carolina
University, giving them a five
win and one loss record going
into the quarter-finals where
they were defeated by Duke.
Sperling was named the
second-ranked individual
debater in the tournament, and
Tatum took third place, out of 88
debaters competing at Wake
Forest.
