Z-6
'Not Wastefully Idle ’ -Owen
.. Perhaps in the future a small transit system will be developed
BY RICHARD HILL
The newest building on the
campus, Z-6, may not deserve
the “white elephant” label
many have given it.
Although Z-6 was turned over
to the college more than four
months ago, the belief that it
has been standing wastefully
idle is not entirely true.
According to Henry L. Owen,
administrative assistant for
development, the final equip
ment was received and moved
into the building two weeks ago.
Other minor work still remains
to be done, such as removing
“bugs” from the air con
ditioning and heating system
and repairing a circuit breaker
which is not functioning
properly.
The massive red brick
structure on the northwest side
of the campus has been called
one of the most modern and
efficient food service buildings
in the university system. A
45.000 square foot building,
costing $1.6 million, it was in
spected by the Georgia
Education Authority and turned
over to the college on June 17.
According to Ward B. Pafford,
president, “The actual date for
occupying the building has not
yet been set.”
When Z-6 was planned in
early 1970, enrollment was
expected to increase to 10,000.
Originally, the structure was to
be used, along with the present
student center, as a second
student center and food ser
vice building to serve the west
area of the campus. T-5, the
newest dormitory, and a group
of other buildings were being
planned for that area.
But due to the decrease,
rather than the projected in
crease in enrollment, plans for

the construction of other
buildings were abandoned.
However, the Education,
Center, Biology-Chemistry
Building, and T-5 were all built
in the area of Z-6.
According to Art Sternberg,
director of dining services, the
college cannot support two
dining halls. However, Stern
berg said he and his staff would
like to move the present
cafeteria to Z-6. “The building
is more functional and is
designed for preparing and
serving food better than the
present facility which has been
occupied since 1967,” he said.
Sternberg said he did not
want to cause a hardship on
students by moving the
cafeteria to Z-6. He said break
fast and dinner should not cause
problems since students could

work these meals around their
schedule. However, he said
lunch may cause a few
problems since some students
have only a limited amount of
time in which to eat. The walk
from the center of the campus
to Z-6 takes approximately 12
minutes. But when the cafeteria
is moved, the snack bar will
remain in the present student
center and provide a place for
students to eat who will not have
time to go to Z-6.
Sternberg encouraged
students to voice their opinion
about moving the dining hall to
the new building. “Thus far, I

reaction either favoring or
opposing the move,” he said.
Sternberg suggested opening Z
-6 for one day for students to
inspect it.
“When students see the new
building, it could remove any
doubts they have about going to
Z-6 to eat. The minor problems
of relocating the dining hall will
probably be made up for by the
many conveniences in the new
building. Perhaps in the future
a small transit system will be
developed to take students to Z
-6 and even other areas of the
campus,” Sternberg said.
Cecil Knotts, director of
student activities, said, “When

student center will not lose its

moving the game room to the

and using the present game

Sometimes we have so many

Z-6 is designed primarily for
food service, with the only office
being for the director of food
services and his staff. The
present student center has a lot
of office space available. When
the food service is moved to Z-6,
offices which are presently in
the student center could have
the opportunity to expand.
Knotts also said that the
building would be used for
student activities such as
concerts, coffeehouses, dances,
and possibly movies. Knotts
said Z-6 will be better for small
concerts and more dances could
possibly be offered since, at the
present time the HPE building
