depth of talent is quite broad for

West Georgia and the Braves.
He gained instant popularity
among the fans and respect
from his coaches when he
scored 32 points against
Western Kentucky University.
In this game, the Braves pulled
a surprising upset over Western
Kentucky.
Against LaGrange Junior
College, Magley pulled his
career total in rebounds to 19. In
his two years at West Georgia,
Magley has been a regular most
of the time. With the Braves, he
has averaged 10 points a game
and nine rebounds.
According to Coach Jerry
Reynolds, Magley will play an
important role in the team’s
success this year. “Fat will
definitely have to score for us to
win. So far during practice
sessions, he led the team in
scoring and rebounding and is
having a consistent practice
season.”
Of the team this year, Magley
is one of only three people who
have won a starting position.
His hustle and determination
this ,preseason has been great,
and both Coach Kaiser and
Reynolds, said they feel this will
be necessary if the Braves have
hopes of another shot at a
National Championship.
Magley is involved in his
classroom activities as well as
basketball. He is a Sociology
major and sports a 2.5 overall
grade point average. He is a
typical college student in that
he studies and goes to class, but
on the basketball court he is
extraordinary, his coaches
claim
However, this next week

Tim Reynolds will give it their
best and try to make the star
ting line-up.
Regardless of who makes the
line-up the Braves will be ready
to do battle as they enter the
Erie Pennsylvania Classic on
Friday, November 29. The
Braves will start off with one of
the toughest northern teams in
their league, Maryland Eastern
Shore.
Projecting the success of the
Braves this season is an almost
impossible task. They will start
their season competing with
many northern teams, with
good basketball reputations
who the Braves have neither
played nor seen. However,
Coach Kaiser said “If we win
against Maryland Eastern
Shore we will have a good in
dication of a winning season.”

Greg Smith, a freshman from Gaithersburg, Md., has been one of
the top performers this year for the West Georgia College Braves
cross country team. Smith helped lead the Braves to their second
consecutive South Atlantic Conference title this season.
Braves Close Season;
Finish On Strong Note
The West Georgia Braves
crosscountry team, winners of
the South Atlantic Conference
title this season, closed their
season last weekend as they
finished fourth in the Georgia
State Invitational meet at
DeKalb Junior College in
Decatur. The Braves, despite
their youth , finished the year
very strong, according to Coach
Bill Webb.
He said following the DeKalb
meet, “We finished the season
on a real positive note. Almost
everypne had a performance
that was better than or
equivilant to his best time of the
year. For such an unex
perienced team, we made good
progress this year.”
Jim Gaines, of Chamblee,
continued to be the Braves best
runner as he finished ninth in
the field of 100 runners. Gaines ,
who has been in top of the field
in most of the Braves meets this
year, was only one minute off
the winning time as he clocked
in at 26:27.
Finishing behind Gaines was
a freshman, Greg Smith, who
has been the Braves number
two runner most of the season.
His time was 26:58. Smith, who
is from Gaithersburg, Md., is
one of the most promising

West Georgia failed in its bid
for a winning season when Ft.

with less than five minutes left

final home game of the season
Sunday. The loss dropped West

and four losses.
Ft. Benning scored first but
the Braves came right back

Munford Mueller getting a
valuable assist. Drew McKay
then scored the go-ahead goal
that kept the Braves hopes for

game was a defensive battle
until Ft. Benning scored the

Ernie Raney, the Braves
assistant track coach, also
competed in the meet and he
finished just behind Gaines in
14th place with a time of 25:51.
Although the West Georgia
season is officially over, the
Braves runners won’t be sitting
on their laurels over the winter,
Webb said. “The runners will be
keeping a distance log during
the winter as they get ready for
track season. The guys will be
working for a goal of running
100 miles each week. The goal
for December will be 400-plus
miles.”
The Braves will also be
competing in several marathon
runs over th winter Webb said
plans are for the runners to
compete in a 20-mile meet next
month and in a 26-mile event
later on.
Webb said in reviewing the

rebuilding year and we won’t be
