Twiggs, in his statement, said
that although students do have a
channel through the SAC, it is
only an indirect advisory
function, comparable to
“talking through the screen
door.” He said, “We want to
come into the living room and
sit down to talk with the
Regents.” \
Another argument of the
Regents concerns the
responsibility of the position.
They claim that the duties of the
job would be too overbearing for
a full time student.
But the SAC does not follow
that reasoning either. They
cited figures showing the
average student as spending
less than 30 hours a week in
academically related activities.
Twiggs said, “This is
probably far less than the
amount of time that the Regents
devote to their full time oc
cupations." He feels confident
they will nominate a student
Regent who can “effectively

CPB Discusses
Special Charge
Although the Wednesday
night movies will remain free,
the College Programming
Board, in an attempt to “bring
better entertainment to the
campus,’’ is discussing the
possibilities of setting a charge
of 25 cents for special events.
“If we are going to bring in
special movies, it’s almost
definite that we will charge a
small admission fee,” Bill
Kraus, CPB member said. “The
Wednesday night movies will
remain free and there hasn't
been any thought about
changing that.”
Booking possibilities, such as
the Erotic Film Festival and the
film, “The Sting,” will
definitely draw a charge, Kraus
stated, but it is not definite how
much that charge will be.
This week’s student gallery was submitted by staff photographer Fred Roger, a
junior from Atlanta, who captured this WGC student ‘'standing it up on

Hindman’s headstone reads:
Robert Holt
Oldest Son of Thomas and
Sarah Hindman
Born June 20. 1822
Killed at Ripley. Miss.
By Wm. C. Falkner
May 8. 1819
Aged 26 years, 10 months
The man who killed Hindman,
“Old Colonel” Falkner (the
writer William later added a
“u” to the spelling of the last
name) has been described as a
“great influence” on his great
grandson’s life. Although the
“Old Colonel” died eight years
before William was bom, some
critics contend that the writer
Ripley Duel
was very aware of the near
legendary status his great
grandfather occupied in the
family history.
“Old Colonel” Falkner was
known as something of a rough
and tumble figure. He com
manded a Confederate infantry
troop during the Civil War, and
at one time built a 60-mile long,
narrow-gauge railroad,
practically with his own hands.
It is interesting to note that
Falkner had been a comrade
of Hindman during the Mexican
War, and some historians
regard the two men’s fatal
argument as a “misun
derstanding.”

Possibly foreshadowing his
famous descendant’s later
literary success, in 1881 Falkner
had written a popular southern
romance novel entitled “The
White Rose of Memphis ”
The “Old Colonel” was shot to
death on the streets of Ripley by
an ex-business partner Nov. 5,
1889.
According to Dr. Doxey, it is
interesting to think what would
have happened had Hindman’s
pistol not misfired that spring
day in 1849. “Perhaps if Hind
man had won that duel,” he
said, “there would never had
been a William Faulkner.”
Beer

When told of Cox’s remarks.
Smith said, “If it is indeed legal
to possess beer publicly at the
University of Georgia, then we
seriously need to reevaluate our
position and either modify or
reaffirm it. We would certainly
prefer that our students enjoy
these activities on the campus,
rather than outside the campus
where problem situations could
arise.”
