Debate Team
WGC Selected
For Finals
The West Georgia College debate team has been selected
as one of the top 16 teams in the nation and consequently
received an automatic bid to compete for the national
championship at the University of the Pacific, April 18-21.
The announcement was made by Professor John Deßross of
the University of Southern California who is chairman of the
national debate tournament.
This marks the third consecutive year that West Georgia
has qualified a team for the national championship tour
nament Representing West Georgia in the national finals
will be George Knapp, a senior from Stockton, California,
and Jeane Pierre Sakey, a senior from Fort Walton, Florida.
Since there are no divisions in debate, West Georgia had to
compete against every major institution in the United States
to win an automatic berth to nationals. West Georgia debate
Coach Chester Gibson explained the procedure used in
selecting the top 16 teams: "A national committee composed
of 15 prominent debate coaches reviews the record of debate
teams who wish to be considered for a birth in the NDT.
Based upon their performance over the entire year, the
nation’s top 16 teams are given an automatic invitation to
nationals. Other schools may qualify later if they win their
regional championships.”
