personally feels students should
have an active role in the
government of the campus and
that, in fact, “1 encourage this.”
Addressing himself to a more
specific point of student interest
here, Townsend indicated that
he personally did not have any
objection to students drinking
alcoholic beverages on campus.
The Student Government
Association tried un
successfully last quarter to get
Pafford to approve such a
measure for the students but
failed in two attempts.
While Townsend did not say
whether or not he would ap
prove such a proposal, he did
say, “I don’t want any occasion
ruined by some cheap drunks.
But my own personal view
would have to be that if the
occasion suggests it (drinking
beer and wine), and there is a
certain amount of restraint
placed upon it by persons, then I
have no objection. But, I will not
tolerate any person who comes
to an activity and makes
himself a nuisance. That person
would have to be dealt with.
But, I’ve always assumed that if
anyone can hold his beer and
wine, then I have no objection,”
Townsend continued.
