same as the earlier game’s,
with the only difference coming
in a defensive manuever rather
than offensive. Where as in the
afternoon game, Gail Jackson
came on to give West Georgia a
lead that never diminished, in
the evening contest, Carolyn
Almond gave the Lady Clan
enough man-to-man defense to
get by for the whole season.
Meanwhile, Billingsley,
Flowers and Linda Nalls
cleared the boards and com
bined for 44 second half points to
leave the Lady Clan behind.
Sixteen of those points came in
the first five minutes of play
compared to five for Belhaven.
The Lady Braves went on top,
54-45, to stay. Clema Billingsley
and Linda Nalls led all scorers
with 28 points each. Clema
pulled down 15 rebounds
followed by Claudia Flowers
with 13.
In semi-final competition
Friday night, West Georgia was
matched with the tournament’s
number one seed, Alabama
State.
The ASU Lady Hornets
carried a roster with three
players over six feet tall, the
tallest being Willidean Harris at
6’3V4”. West Georgia countered
the height of the opposition with
a little height of their own in
6’2” Bev Jones.
While Bev kept the State team

busy inside, West Georgia’s
quickness and alert passing
outside provided a comfortable
42-26 half-time Lady Braves
lead. Linda Nalls and Claudia
Flowers paced West Georgia
before the half with 14 and 10
points respectively. Clever
Nalls contributed six while Gail
Jackson, Gema Billingsley and
Bev Jones popped for four
points each. And inspite of the
opposing height, West Georgia
out rebounded ‘Bama St. 22-11.
The second stanza again
proved to be West Georgia’s
‘‘bread and butter.” Although
the Lady Hornets closed the gap
several times, they never came
closer than a six point dif
ference. Likewise, although
State collected 37 more points in
the second 20 minutes of play,
most came in the closing
minutes after West Georgia
nearly shut off any scoring
threat by State.
The Lady Braves did what
they did best; feeding the ball
inside to Clema Billingsley. The
freshman center responded
with 24 points in the second half,
finishing the game with 28.
Clema also grabbed 15 rebounds
to lead that department for
West Georgia. Linda Nalls and
Claudia Flowers based the
outside shooting with 24 and 16
points respectively.

In the championship match,
West Georgia met the Berry
Lady Vikings of Kay Jones for
'the fourth time this year.
Disappointingly, the Lady
Braves fell for the third time.
Two things stand out par
ticularly. In this engagement,
for the first time in the tourney,
West Georgia failed to regroup
and score big in the second half.
And even more discouraging
was the fact that for the first
time this year, no Lady Brave
tallied more than 20 points.
West Georgia took the Up,
scored the first points and held
the lead for only two minutes.
After Berry tied the game at 4-4,
West Georgia didn’t lead again
until four minutes remained in
the first half. At that point the
Lady Braves pulled up 29-28 but
from there on out, it was
Berry’s ball game. At the half.
Berry led 38-36.
The big story was Berry’s
center, Nancy Paris, who
pumped 12 shots from the floor.
Paris missed only one shot the
entire half. Most of her shots
came from the right side of the

Defensive changes in the
second half cooled Paris off. She
hit five of seven to finish with
game and tournament high
scoring honors, 34 points.
During second period play,
West Georgia fell behind 44-38
and the two teams settled into a
see-saw affair of basket-for
basket for the next 20 minutes.
Still, it was the finest game of
the tournament with both teams
using every trick in the book of
picks, rolls, screens and plays.
West Georgia allowed only
three turnovers in this half,
their fewest in a period for the
year. Though Berry turned over
nine balls, the West Georgia
Ladies couldn’t capitalize.
Gema Billingsley and Gever
Nalls led the Lady Braves with
18 points each. Gaudia Flowers
and Linda Nalls pitched in 15
and 14 points respecUvely to
round out the Lady Braves
double scorers.
In post-game ceremonies, the
ladies accepted the second
place trophy with disheartened
attitudes but sincere ex
pectations of playing their

tournament in Ashland, Ohio,

Most of the teams in the

Assistant coach Debby

McGury added, “I’m really

It’s a dream come true for a

much about the region games,
but I know that if we meet Berry
again they don’t want to lose.
Not again.”
