Golfers host tourney at Fairfield

Golf coach Ronnie Pritchett
and his young team are off to a
fairly good start this season and
are looking forward to the West
Georgia Invitational at Fair
field Plantation on Monday and
Tuesday. Today’s match with
Shorter has been cancelled
because of bad weather.
Coach Pritchett indicated
that overall the team has been
playing pretty well; in
consistency, however, has been
a problem. He did say, though,

Diane Benford’s Lady Braves
travel to Rome this weekend to
face Shorter and Jacksonville
State. They will return to action
on the home courts next
Wednesday against Columbus.
The Braves are sporting a 4-5
record, and, according to
Benford, “should be 5-5 after
this week’s matches against
Tift,” held yesterday.
The team is tuning up for
next weekend’s GAIAW tour
nament, which will be played on
West Georgia courts. The
tourney will run Thursday
through Saturday.

the Valdosta State Invitational
had been playing dependably.
The West Georgia
Invitational will be competitive,
according to Pritchett, who
figures his linksmen to have a
slight advantage since it will be
held on home ground. The
match will feature all the
conference teams except
Columbus. Tee-off times are 1
p.m. Monday and 8 a.m.
Tuesday.
Benford explained that the
Braves would have to “play
over our heads to win” in the
tourney and expected only a
“fair” performance by the
team. The top two placers in the
tournament will qualify for a
regional tournament in
Alabama.
The most productive players
for West Georgia have been
Roxanne Baldwin, with a 7-2
record, and Val Thomas, who is
5-4.
Covenant outshoots Braves
“Do unto others as you
would have them do unto you.”
West Georgia’s soccer club
took these Biblical words to
heart as they awarded a 6-1 win
to visiting Covenant Saturday.
The Braves like to have
teams sit back and give up a lot
of shots on goal, and that’s
exactly what West Georgia did
for the Saints.
The culprit was once again
the play for the Braves’ mid
field as Covenant spent the
entire morning chipping balls
over the helpless West Georgia
halfbacks and chasing them
into the penalty area.

Mead breaks own record

The West Georgia track
team, perhaps affected by lack
of practice because of the poor
weather earlier this week,
turned out only a fair per
formance for the home crowd
Saturday in the West Georgia
Invitational.
The Braves mustered a fourth
place finish in the seventh
annual event attended by more
than a dozen schools in the
southeast.
The trackmen will travel to
Rome today for the Berry
Invitational.
Coach Don Price had very
little to say about the team’s
performance except that it was
not an outstanding meet for the
Braves. “We didn’t run very

things got totally out of control
in the second. Covenant outahot
the Braves 22-10 for the game as
West Georgia keepers Warren

visitors and surrendered six
goals.

well,” he said.
Although Price had not an
ticipated a big win for the
Braves, it seemed the Braves’
coach had other things on his
mind besides a fourth place
finish. Still, the Braves’ finish
was an improvement as they
finished sixth the preceding
year. Troy State claimed first
place honors with Albany State
and Jefferson State second and
third.
The only record breaker for
the day was the Braves’ Mike
Meade, who ran a 9:20 in the
steeplechase, a record he has
broken three times. Price also
mentioned J. Greer’s 22 flat in
the 200 and Chris Denise’s 45.5
in the triple jump as a personal
best for the Braves.

Today Moss leads his troops
to Mobile for the annual Mobile
invitational tournament.
Although West Georgia has
never fared particularly well in
this event, the coach is giving it
his best shot.
“I’m gonna take my best
down there and see what
happens,” said Moss, “the
experience will be good for our
guys.” The Braves’ opening
match is at 10:30 tomorrow
morning.
The Braves suffered a critical
loss when tri-participant Chuck
Wynn suffered a fracture in his
left foot during the meet. He
will be lost for the remainder of
the season.
However, Clarence Porch’s
return to the lineup should lift
the Braves’ spirits. Porch, who
was injured earlier, will par
ticipate in the hurdles and the
mile relay.
Coach Price considers his
team to be one of the top
favorites for the Berry in
vitational. “The weatherman
has predicted great weather for
the whole week, so there should
be no excuse for a sub-par
performance for the Braves this
time around,” he said.
