Townsend speech
Continued from page 2
“The challenge of blackness
is different now from what it
was 10 years ago. You don’t
need a special program or
course now, largely because the
future is not going to require
you to be black, white, red, or
whatever.
“The future is not in the color
of your skin, it’s not in
geneaology, your race or
culture. It is in you as people, as
distinct individuals. The future

However, the sweetest
moment of all was forthcoming.
The consolation draw matched
the Braves with the tough
Georgia Bulldogs, who had
beaten them 4-2 in their
previous meeting here. Coach
Moss was worried. “I was
scared to death that they were
gonna kill us,” he stated, “so I
made a few changes to a
defensive game.” It worked as
the Braves dominated play,
especially in midfield. Frank
Ingui was the hero as he con
verted a pass from Tim Dugan
for the Game’s only score.
Moss was ecstatic about his
club’s play. “Considering that
we pay our own way and have to
fight and scratch, we’ve built a
good club,” he asserted, “and I
think the future looks bright.’’
Moss was right in that West
Georgia players pay their own
expenses with little help from
the school. Most of the other
clubs at the tourney have their
expenses paid. The Braves
traveled over 1700 miles last fall
so it adds up.
Making the trip down for the
Braves were Callahan, Green,
Ingui, Moss, Dugan, and Phelps
along with Chris Sellin, Mike
Flinn, Sonny Kemp, Yuta
Fujimatsu, Jim Melotte, David
Hughes, and Duncan Mac Neil.
All were praised by Moss for
their outstanding per
formances.
Apparently the tournament
committee and players were
impressed also as both Green
and Moss were named to the
tourney’s all-star team.
West Georgia can’t rest on its
laurels as the team travels to
Toccoa Falls tomorrow to take
on the Saints. When last the two
teams did battle the game
ended in a 3-3 deadlock.

He told the group “you have
arrived. You should have the
self confidence to accept that.
While in daily life you will
probably run into
discrimination but as a people
you have arrived. But you must
have an education, you can’t
fall back on the fact that you are

Chris Poole, a junior from
Haralson, Ga apparently had
an epileptic seizure while
showering, according to a
spokesman from the West
Georgia Ambulance Service
who handled the call.
Public safety said that when
they arrived on the scene, Poole
was semi-conscious. They then
called the ambulance.
He had about a two inch
laceration on the back of his
head as a result of the fall, they
said.
Poole was taken to Tanner
where he received about 5
stitches. X-rays were made as a
precaution but no fractures
were found.
The incident occurred at
around 7:30 Monday morning.

Townsend cautioned the
group against getting hung up
on looking backwards.
“Maybe I’m a romantic, but
to me the challenge you face is
“do you believe in yourself, do
you believe in a purpose and do
you want to be a competent
