Netiers disco
their way
to third win
BY MARK McCLOUD
For a moment it seemed as
though West Georgia’s tennis
match with Mercer would be
cancelled, for the second time
this season because of
threatening rain. But then the
fortune cookie smiled twice, as
the Braves overcame windy
weather, enjoyed a disco beat
and captured their third victory
of the year in a match which
featured all non-scholarship
players.
The tennis team will travel to
Emory, who is extremely
tough, today and hit the road
again on Tuesday to match up
against Georgia State before
competing in the conference
tournament May 4 and sth.
The disco music in Love
Valley didn ’ t seem to bother the
netters at all Monday as they
got down and dominated singles
play. It was number one David
Dude defeating Wilder in
perhaps the most exciting
match of the day, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1.
Other winners for West Georgia
were Dean Jones, who took
Velie in two, 6-3, 6-3. Don
Harshbarger, playing his best
match of the year, defeated
Walker 7-5, 6-2, and Mike
Richardson upped his personal
record to 10 wins, beating
Desosa, 6-2, 6-2.
“Wesure did deserve it,” said
senior Don Harshbarger.
Earlier in the year, a West
Georgia-Mercer match was
cancelled due to rain. The
Braves were ahead at the time
and it would have given the
netmen something which has
been hard to come by this
season- a win.
In doubles action, it was
Harshbarger and Campbell
teaming for their Bth doubles
win over Velie-Desosa, 6-3, 6-4.
Mercer-Jones scrapped 3-6, 6-4,
7-6 to defeat Walker and Harris.
Mercer took its only doubles
victory when Wilder-Trammel
defeated West Georgia’s Dude -
Richardson, 7-6, 6-3.
Mercer Coach Bob Wilder
said it was their last match of
the year and his team was also
building for the future and was
happy with his 9-14 mark.
West Georgia Coach Tom
Learning, still dumbfounded
over the ragged season con
tinued his, “silence is golden’’
approach to the press.
However, his team members
are not ready to give up yet;
according to freshman
Richardson, the conference is
the big thing. “Although we
have had a poor season, we
haven’t played as well as we
can,” he added. “We are young
and building for the future and
“if we play up to our potential,
we could surprise a few people
in the tournament,” Richardson
said. “If we can win these next
two away matches it could
really help us out in the con
ference,” Harshbarger added.
West Georgia certainly has
nothing to lose.
