Music Dept. Offers It
BV GAIL W. COWART
If miMic is your bag, then direct your steps to the humanities
building Whether it’s performing, listening, composing or teaching
that moves you, West Georgia’s music department offers a diverse
assortment from classical to jazz.
On the ground floor, you will find the Fine Arts Dept, office, the
Music Library and adjacent listening lab, Kathy Cashen, Recital
Hall and the practice rooms.
Dr. Robert Coe, chairman of Fine Arts, or his secretary, Joan
Chandler, can provide detailed information on programs of music
study, undergraduate or graduate.
The music library has an ample selection of classical music
which may be checked out by any WGC student, regardless of his
area of study. Across the hall in the language lab, students may
listen to symphonies, piano solos, and so on by simply requesting
the preferred selection. There is no catalog of available recordings,
but a card file (by composer) is maintained.
During the year, many free concerts and recitals are given in
Kathy Cashen Recital Hall. The hall contains a Steinway concert
grand piano and an 18 - rank Reuter organ. Performance schedules
are posted in the humanities building lobby. Programs are varied
and feature visiting professional musicians as well as faculty and
student offerings.
The third floor of the building houses the studio offices of the
music faculty. Private instruction for credit is offered in piano,
organ, voice, strings, brass, woodwind, percussion and guitar.
In addition to private study, performance groups abound. West
Georgia’s concert choir has twice toured eastern Europe The
chamber singers make concert tours, including trips to Disney
World. The opera workshop stages a major performance each
year, and has brought the campus "The Mikado wnd Ihe Magic
Flute,” to name a few.
West Georgia’s wind ensemble is the concert band. The jazz
ensemble performs contemporary band literature and tours high
schools in the state.
Smaller performance ensembles include the women’s and men’s
choral ensemble, the keyboard, string, woodwind or brass en
sembles, and a pep band.
So if music is a staple in your life, take advantage of the offerings
of West Georgia’s music department. Somebody’s always playing!
