Auditorium To Ring With
'Die Fledermaus’ Opera
To kick off the Fine Arts
Festival, the stern and white
columned auditorium will ring with
voices in three quarter time to the
waltzes of Johann Strauss, un
surpassed waltz king of Vienna.
Champagne (at least imaginary
champpagne) will be bubbling as
the story of the outrageous Dr.
Falke unfolds.
If you are beginning to wonder
what this is all about, “the
Fledermaus," only opera by
Johann Strauss, will be performed
by the WGC Opera Workshop in
concerted effort with the drama
department. The Opera, to be
directed by Inge Manski - Lundeen,
will be performed May 12 -16 at 8
p.m.
The story of Dr. Faulke begins
after a fancy-dress ball in which he
was dressed as a bat. He is left
asleep by his friend Eisenstein on a
public bench to be awakened by a
jeering crowd. Dr. Falke plots
revenge. He takes Eisenstein to a
ball given by Prince Orlofsky,
where the unsuspecting victim

"SETTING SONS”
The Jam
(Polydor)
The Jam are solidly in the
forefront of the current ‘Mod’
revival in England, so it’s no
surprise to hear anti
establishment leanings
expressed on “Setting Sons”.
What is surprising is the new
depth and maturity evident in
guitarist-singer Paul Weller’s
new songs, showing an un
derstanding not only of what is
wrong in England, but also of
how it went wrong. “Setting
Sons” is a clear-eyed look at
the end of the British Empire
as seen by a contemporary
observer.
"GETHAPPY”
ELVIS COSTELLO
(COLUMBIA)
Elvis Costello’s anxiety and
paranoia over women reaches
new heights on the ironically
titled "Get Happy”. It con
tains 20 songs, some
fragmentary, some fully
developed. The songs explore
the back alleys of the human
psyche and libido, with
degressions on the ultimate
meaninglessness of existence.
Costello is the end-all in Angry
Young Men; he leaves little to
be said after “Get Happy”.
"THE BEAT"
THE BEAT
(EPIC)
Perfect summertime rock-n
--roll, the first album by Los
Angeles’ The Beat comes off
sounding a hundred percent
better than the efforts by their
fellow bands the Knack and
the Cretones. The reason is
that the Beat are classier than
the truly moronic Cretones,
and don’t cannibalize others’
songs like the Knack. This is
an album of simple, fresh
sounding songs from an un
pretentious band.
"ROCK-A-ROLLA”
JUDAS PRIEST
(COLUMBIA)
This album’s nifty cover art
(a bottle cap with “Rock-A-
Rolla” lettered on it in Coca-
Cola style) is the perfect
counterpoint to the stomp-rock
meets his maid and his masked
wife, as well as the prison warden
who had in the meantime arrested
a man he believed to be Eisenstein.
The complications come to a
climax when all gather at the jail
after the party breaks up in the
morning.
The cast: Gabriel von Eisen
stein, David McGukin, Rosalinda,
Patricia Calloway, Adele, Missi
Head, Alfred, Steve Rudy, Dr.
Blind, Legree McCamey, Dr.
Falke, Jeff McClendon, Frank, Bill
Myers, Prince Orlofsky, Sharon
Blackwood, Ida, Nancy Simmons,
Frosch, Burton Black.
The West Georgia Chorus will be
featured in the production, also,
others taking part in the production
are Bruce Borton, Musical
Director and Jim Burroughs, set
designer.
Tickets are available through the
fine arts office. Call 834-1224.

contained inside. Judas Priest
are a chain-wielding gang of
leather boys from Bir
mingham, England who play
ultra-heavy rock music. In
fact, their violence-dominated
brand of heavy metal is about
as rough and tough as rock
gets. "Rock-A-Rolla” is
mostly a compilation of
English singles never released
over here, coming on the heels
of last year’s "Hell Bent For
Leather” and their current
“Unleashed In The East” live
album. While most of the
songs are new toU.S. listeners,
some (like "Tyrant” and
"Genocide”) have already
been done over here. Judas
Priest are better than Valium
for releasing tension, but those
whips and chains make me
nervous.
