Wide receivers on the best team in the nation make

Intramural football season kicks off
This season’s college and profes
sional football schedules should br
ing plenty of excitement, but if you
are looking for a different brand of
fast - paced and exciting football, the
intramural program is your ticket.
At WGC, intramural football is
played with flags, as it is on most col
lege campuses. Instead of touching
an opponent to halt his progress, you
simply pull off one of the two flags
attached to a belt. Some teams do try
and establish a running game, but
most offenses are basically pass
oriented.
The rules of intramural football
are more or less the same as those
directing tackle football with the ob
vious exceptions for penalties such
as roughing the kicker and other
fouls concerning physical contact.
There are also no kickoffs in in
tramural football, but punting is
done in much the same fashion of
conventional football. The amount of
physical contact allowed during the
course of the game is dependent
upon the official, but recent rule in
novations have turned the act of
blocking into something similar to
guarding an opponent on the basket
ball court. Holding and illegal con
tact penalties can stall a team’s
drive quicker than anything and
linemen are advised to keep their
arms tucked in and the contact to a
minimum.
This seasons intramural schedule
promises to be as exciting as ever.
Intramurals Coordinator Perry
Holland expects about 50 teams to
have signed up before the deadline,
when the final schedules will be com
pleted. Holland, who works with a
total intramurals budget of about
$26,000, expects that games will be
played on every day of the week.
This should insure that the playoffs
and championship game will be com
pleted before the end of the quarter.
The league will consist of four divi
sions: Fraternity, Independent,
Dorms, and Women. Each team
entering the league must pay an en
trance fee of SIO.OO and a forfeit fee
of the same amount which will be
returned unless that team forfeits a
game during the course of the
season.

Any protest of a game must be sub
mitted in written form and accom
panied by a SIO.OO protest fee. Pro
tests usually concern a questionable
player and Holland makes it clear
that a person must be a member of
the represented organization to be
eligible for a spot on that team’s
roster. “It’s done on an honor
system. We trust the teams to do
what’s right, but if they use an in
eligible player and the other team
doesn’t protest, there is really very
little we can do about it. We just
don’t have the time to check
everybody,” says Holland.

Three minutes and twenty-eight
seconds into Saturday night’s mat
chup with number one ranked Troy
State, Braves field goal kicker Rob
Rice shocked the Trojans with a 27
yard field goal which put the under
dog Braves up 3-0. Three quarters
later the Braves Stevie Young shock
ed the Trojans with a 97 yard
touchdown gallop. However, Troy
State spent the time between the two
shocks scoring five touchdowns on
the way to a convincing 41-10 demoli
tion of the Braves in Carrollton.
Rice’s first quarter field goal
came at the end of the game’s initial
drive, a 62 yard march to the Trojan
11. Although unable to establish a
running attack, (five carries for five
yards) the Braves moved the ball on
the strength of a pair of Cater Pierce
passes, a 14 yarder to Hal Lamb and
a beautiful 43 yard toss to A1 Shep
pard.
The slender lead lasted till late in
the first quarter. On their first three
possessions the Trojans were whip
ped soundly at the line of scrimmage
by a fired up Braves defense.
However, after Rob Rice failed to
connect on a field goal attempt from
37 yards out, the Trojan offense
seemed to find its stride.
Freshmen quarterback Mike Turk
led the Trojans on a 61 yard march to
the West Georgia 19. From there,

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3,1984, THE WEST GEORGIAN-
Ted Clem nailed a 31 yard, game
tying field goal.
Troy State moved ahead to stay in
the second period on an 18 yard
touchdown run by Jimmie Haywood.
Taking over at their own 38 after a
punt, the Trojans hammered the ball
downfield on seven running plays
before Haywood ripped off his TD
run. The PAT by Clem was good.
With only two minutes left in the
half and with control of the ball at
the 40, the Braves appeared to be
headed into intermission down by on
ly a single score. However, as in last
week’s loss to Jacksonville State, the
offense turned generous. Tailback
Stevie Young lost a fumble at the 40,
setting up a quick Trojan score.
Mike Turk did the honors for TSU,
knifing in from seven yards out on a
keeper. Clem’s PAT was wide and
the Trojans took a 16-3 advantage to
the dressing rooms.
Immediately setting the tone of the
second half, the Trojans pounded in
for a touchdown on their first posses
sion.. Relying on the running of
fullback Ted Horstead, halfback
Jimmie Haywood, and Mike Turk,
the Trojans powered 76 yards on nine
rushes to the WGC 17. Halfback
Doug Brown applied the finishing
touch to the 93 yard drive with a 17
yard touchdown run. An option run
around right end by Turk was suc
cesful from three yards out for point
after and a 24-3 lead.
Approximately five minutes later
the Trojans added three points to
their lead. After intercepting a Cater
Pierce pass, they moved the ball to
the WGC 22. Clem nailed a 38 yarder
from there.
The highlight of the game for the
few West Georgia fans still present
came in the last quarter. Backed up
to the three yard line and facing
third down and ten, Frank Barden
handed off to Stevie Young. Young
did the rest. Fighting off tacklers
behind the line and just past it,
Young found an opening to the left
sideline and raced 97 yards to
paydirt. Electrifying the remaining
faithful in the process. Young’s run
also set anew school mark for
longest run from scrimmage.
It did not, however, take the fight
out of the Trojans. Immediately
following the run the Trojans
mounted a five play -68 yard blit
zkrieg. The key play, a remarkable,
leaping reception by Rufus Cox, net
ted 25 yards. On the next play, little
used halfback Brad Simms bolted in
from 33 yards out. Clem’s PAT was
good.
The Trojans made full use of the
Braves final turnover. After picking
off a Frank Barden pass and return
ing it to the WGC 43, the TSU offense
went back to work. Eleven plays
later Danny O’Toole scored from
four yards out. Clem’s PAT was good
for a 41-10 final margin.
