Barge a winning team player
By Mike Kerlin
Sports Editor
A broken ankle and a demotion
from the starting line-up after a
coaching change prompted Anthony
Barge’s move from Division I
basketball to play for West Georgia
his last two seasons.
Barge, who left University of South
Alabama (USA), is the only return
ing starter from the Braves’ 1986
Gulf South Conference championship
team. The 21-year-old-Barge was
ranked third in Division II nationally
in free-throw percentages, and he
was ranked Bth in the GSC for scor
ing with a 17.5 point-per-game
average last year. Currently, Barge
is leading the Braves in scoring,
averaging approximately 25 points
per game, and is a key element in
Head Coach Roger Kaiser’s 13-1
squad.
In high school, Barge was a starter
for Douglasville as a sophomore,
scoring an average of 18 points a
game. By the time he graduated in
1982, Barge had improved his scoring
average to 29 points per game. The
West Georgia coaching staff con
tacted Barge for possible recruit
ment, but according to Barge,
"every high school ball player thinks
of playing Division I ball.”
Humble about his past perfor
mances and statistics, he is eager to
give credit to his coaches and team
mates. Barge began playing basket
ball at Stewart Middle School during
his seventh-grade year under the
supervision of Coach Phil Partridge.
"He (Coach Partridge) tought me
to play with my back to the net and to
move on the outside,” said Barge. He
hasn’t lost contact with Partridge,
and said he still plays basketball
with his first coach in the summers.
Being an ex-trainer for the Braves,
Partridge was influential in Barge’s
decision to come to West Georgia.
It was under Coach Larry Ruble at
Douglasville High School that Barge
gained his composure and polished
his skills.
"Coach Ruble gave me confidence
in myself, and helped me develop to
my full potential were I felt the most
comfortable playing,” said Barge.
"He has kept up with me in College
attending my games at USA and giv
ing me moral support , he has really
been a great inspiration.”
“Caoch Kaiser is a great
disciplinarian on the court,” said
Barge. "He is a great person to
know...he introduces you to his fami
ly and he will take you places if you
need to go. He will let you know
what’s going on and he also en
courages you to study. He has always
said basketball is second to studies.”
As far as Kaiser’s coaching style,
Barge said, “He is like Rube because
he lets you play your own game with
the freedom to play inside or outside.
I couldn’t do that at U.S.A.”
Before a game, Kaiser, besides be
ing a little nervous himself, will tell

the team to settle down, do what they
do best and play good defense, Barge
said. Playing good defense has
enabled the Braves to play their style
of offense.
“This year we have been able to
play aggressively because we have
five starters and five guys that could
be starters on the bench.” said
Barge. “The whole team is great to
be around and shows a lot of unity on
the court.” He claims the Braves
have the talent but they are lacking
height. “We don’t have the height so
we have to out-hustle the other
team...this has helped us to get into
the passing lanes and make steals."

The Braves have generally been
sluggish at the outset of their games,
and Barge said many times it takes
someone to come off the bench and
spark the team. “Elton Brown, Tim
Wyatt, and Travis Benton can spark
the team and get us going. Warren
Sellers and Derrick Johnson give us
good muscle on the inside and Bobby
Pippins helps with the height
because many teams underestimate
his jumping capability.”
According to Kaiser, teams may
begin to start double teaming Barge,
like the Morris Brown players did
toward the end of their game with

West Georgia. Barge seemed confi
dent that, if double teamed, the team
would be able to pick up the slack.
"The coach might use me as a decoy
to draw players to the inside or out
side away from the play. I ran into a
lot of double teaming in high school
and the rest of the team always pick
ed up the slack.”
Barge has no definite plans for the
future. His immediate plans include
attaining his degree in Recreation.
After school, he said he would like to
continue to play basketball and is
toying with the idea of going
overseas to play in the international
league.
