For years, films have been
made to inform as well as enter
tain. The new film from Roland
Joffe, director of “The Killing
Fields”, informs its audience with
a message of peace straight from
the dialogue, “If might be right,
then there is no place for love in
the world.” This is an ageless
message, especially in this time of
tension between superpowers.
This hopeful message in “The
Mission” refers to the conflict the
priests of this mission have when
the Spanish government attempts
to take it over.
This conflict is fought in two dif
ferent ways. One Priest, Jeremy
Irons, feels the problem can be
solved peacefully. The other
priest, Robert DeNiro, an ex
mercenary who became a priest in
penance for killing his brother,
resorts to force to defeat the
greedy enemy.
This film is one of the best of the
year, possessing all the qualities of
a great film; great acting,
beautiful locations and exciting
conflicts. One is drawn into the
screen from the first scene conti
nuing through to the very end.
Earlier this year “The Mission”
won the hightest honor, “Best Pic
ture”, at the Cannes Film
Festival, in France. It has also
earned a Golden Globe Award
nomination and it will surely
receive some nominations at
Oscar time.
Jeremy Irons and Robert
DeNiro are very convincing in
their roles as Jesuit priests. Irons
shows all the love and compassion
of one who appears holy, while in
contrast, DeNiro, as Mendoza, ex
hibits the ruggedness of a soldier
combined with the pain of a man
doing penance.
The South American filming
location presents some of the most
beautiful scenery ever filmed. It
truly appears to be a heavenly
place.

Christmas is a time for giving.
This applies everywhere, in
cluding Hollywood. Every year
Hollywood sends us a bundle of
celluloid gifts. Some of these films
will be cherished just like a gift
from a loved one. Others are the
type that you could exchange for
something better on the day after
Christmas.
This year, in the stocking, for the
good boys and girls were gifts to
please everyone.
For Baby-sitter, we had the 1950
animated Disney classic, “Lady
and the Tramp”, a film which is as
magical and charming as it was 36
years ago.
For Brother, we had the adven
tures of Gunnery Sergeant
Highway, Clint Eastwood, in
“Heartbreak Ridge”, an exciting
war film about an aging gunnery
sergeant and his reckless platoon
in the invasion of Grenada.
For Mom, there is a wonderful
characterization of a man, Har
rison Ford, who runs away from
the world and looks for harmony
on the “Mosquito Coast”. Mom is
really lucky to get this one. This is
Harrison Ford’s best performance
to date. Look for him at Oscar
time, Mom.
Last but certainly not least, for
Dad, we have the never-ending
adventures of the Starship Enter
prise in “Star Trek IV: The
Voyage Home”. This time we find

the Enterprise going back in time
to retrieve a pair of humpback
whales that will save the Earth of
the 23rd century from alien
destruction. This film is much
lighter than its three predecessors,
very entertaining and one of my
top ten movies of the year.
In the stocking for bad boys and
girls, we have something to
replace the customary lumps of
tcoal.
For Tommy, who does not mind
his parents, but deep down is an
O K. guy, there are a couple of
O.K. films. Movies made not to
torment, but not really to entertain
either, describe Eddie Murphy’s
new fantasy-adventure, “The
Golden Child” and Richard Gere’s
crime-drama, “No Mercy”.
“The Golden Child” is very in
ferior to Murphy’s previous films,
but O.K. if you insist on going to
the movies. “No Mercy” is nothing
to brag about, but it is a vast im
provement over Gere’s last two
movies, “Power” and “King
David”, which were box-office
flops.
Last we have Todd, the meanest
kid on the block, a kid so mean
even Santa Claus doesn’t like him.
Hollywood gave him three of the
worst movies of the year. Movies
that even Todd should not have to
sit through. First, there is the
ridiculous sequel to the 1976 ver
sion of “King Kong”, named ap
propriately “King Kong Lives”. In
this film, we find a comatose Kong
receiving a king size artificial
adventure drama, “The Mosquito Coast”, a

heart, falling in love with lady
Kong and fathering baby Kong.
The next lemon for Todd is the
preposterous comedy-western
from Steve Martin, “Three
Amigos”. This film is almost too
bad for even Todd.
The last gift for Todd is so bad
that he will probably become a
model citizen after seeing, “Little
Shop of Horrors”. This tasteless
comedy, about a blood-sucking
plant, was enough to make anyone
plea for help while watching it. It
gets the honor of being the “Worst
movie of the Christmas season”
and one of the worst of the year.
Todd, enjoy and Happy New Year!
