The Braves kept hopes for a win
ning season alive Saturday defeating
Delta State University 20-15 in their
first conference win in two years.
The WGC defense shut the Statesmen
out in the second half.
The second half shut-out was
preserved when WGC sophomore
defensive back, Thomas Cross broke

David Bums pulled down a touch
down pass from Jimmy Tonkin with
one second remaining, to give Pi
Kappa Alpha a thrilling 22-18 win
over Sigma Nu last Wednesday in a
battle of two previously undefeated
teams.
“I can only give credit to my
Lord, Jesus Christ,” said Bums. “For
me to be that wide open, it had to be
divine intervention.”
At the outset of the game it looked
as though Sigma Nu would take
control. On their first possession,
they marched down the field in six
plays and scored when Alan Price
found Howard McCombs in the
corner of the endzone, to give Sigma
Nu a 6-0 lead. However, the PAT
failed, and it would prove to be costly
later in the game.
The Pikes answered in a hurry,
scoring cm a touchdown pass from
Tonkin to Randy Watts and after the
two-point conversion led 8-6.
Once again however, Sigma Nu
Mascot controversy continues
By Gid Rowell

Is it discriminating or demeaning
to have a Brave as a team nickname
or mascot?
According to supporters of the
Native American movement it is.
The group’s supporters’ declare that
Indian nicknames and mascots
should be banned in all sports at all
levels.
The issue was sparked during the
World Series between the Atlanta
Braves and the Minnesota Twins
where disgruntled American Indians
demonstrated outside of both stadi
ums.
Despite Atlanta and West Georgia
Braves’ 27 yard line with 3:10 left in
the game.
“This win over Delta State really
gets the monkey off our back,” said
WGC head coach Ron Jumey .”Now
we have to remain focused and con
centrate on North Alabama.”
Senior tailback Louis Lomax tied
former WGC quarterback David
Archer’s 1982 record for ten touch
downs in. a season with his second
touchdown of the game. The third
quarter touchdown broke a 13-13
came marching down the field and
scored in just four plays when Price
hooked up with McCombs again in
the endzone, but the PAT failed
giving Sigma Nu just a 12-8 lead.
On the Pike’s next possession, it
took them but three plays to get in
the endzone with a flea-flicker pass
from Mike Cowen to Jimmy Tonkin
with 15 seconds left in the half to
give Pike a 16-12 lead after the two
point conversion.
While both offenses dominated
the first half, the second half saw a
defensive battle that would come
down to the last play of the game.
Sigma Nu got on the board again
early, when Price’s pass into the
comer of the endzone was deflected,
but McCombs managed to come up
with it giving Sigma Nu an 18-16
lead after the PAT failed.
On the Pike’s next possession,
they stormed down the field, but the
drive was killed when McCombs
intercepted a Tonkin pass in the
endzone giving Sigma Nu the ball
back.
The Pike defense held though and
having the same nickname, West
Georgia College school officials say
that they have not received any kind
of protest. WGC has been nicknamed
the Braves since 1933.
Besides protesting against
Atlanta’s nickname, the American
Indians are also against the fans’
behavior during the game. Protestors
claim that the waving of the toma
hawks, the singing of war chants,
and the wearing of headdresses and
war paint by fans is denigrating to
the culture and the religion of the
American Indian.

The Braves began the first half

booted a 21-yard field goal. DSU’s
Ozden Karakurt answered with two
field goals of his own. His second
kick gave DSUa6-3 lead with 12:58

With the ball back, Pike began an
other long drive and looked headed
for a score when Sigma Nu’s Chris

giving Sigma Nu the ball once again.
Again, the Pike defense stood true to
the test and forced Sigma Nu to punt
with just 30 seconds left in the game.

The problem has been acknowl
edged by the Atlanta Braves and will
be addressed by leaders of the Na
tive Americans, Atlanta Braves offi
cials, and officials from the commis
sioners office of major league base
ball.
The issue has been addressed be
fore in 1972 when Stanford Univer
sity changed its nickname from the
Indians to the Cardinal, and in 1973
when the Golden State Warriors of
the National Basketball Association
abandoned the use of all Indian logos
in the organization. Golden State did

two minutes later. Karakurt’s PAT
gave the Statesmen a 13-10 edge.
Adam Campbell ended first half
scoring, kicking a 27 yard field goal
with 3:42 left in the second half. His
kick tied the game at 13.
The game became a defensive
showdown after Lomax’ third-quar
ter touchdown. The only other sec
ond half scoring was a safety awarded
to DSU when Braves’ punter Craig
Davis took a safety with six seconds
left to play.
but thirty seconds left on the clock,
the Pikes looked headed for their
first defeat. With five seconds left, a
Tonkin pass was batted down, and
Sigma Nu began to celebrate,
thinking the game was over, but the
clock still showed one second re
maining. The Pikes had one last
chance, and they made the most of it.

Don Gill led the way, defensively
for the Braves, with 12 tackles, 10 of
which were unassisted. Andre

The win makes the Braves 4-5

Pi Kappa Alpha a miraculous 22-18

With the win, the Pikes remain
